Bowling Green to Charleston -- Wednesday, day 16
The way grows greener, if possible. We pass beautiful farms and
horse ranches. Most of the horse ranches, but not all, are
bordered with dark brown or black fences. We see only a few white
fences. The dark is distinctive.
Following Marsha's instructions, we found old Sissonville Road
(Route 21) and follow it to the hollow (a place between mountains,
often accessed by a narrow road over the ridge of one mountain down to the hollow between the two)
where Marsha and Jim live. We made one wrong turn. Where Marsha
says "you should now be facing Aunt Dorothy's mobile home," we
turned right instead of left. Marsha immediately sent a young
friend who works for her -- Josh -- after us in a white car. As
we pulled up the hill on this narrow road and came to a one-lane
bridge, we were wondering if we had taken a wrong turn and if we
could cross the bridge. Here's this white car behind us, and we
know we're holding up local traffic. Lauren hopped out of the RV
to ask directions, and the young man explained that we had passed
the road. Another man tells us to go on down the road, where the
bus turns around when it runs, so we unhook the car and continue
on in two vehicles. We didn't find the turn around, so we pulled
over the side of the road into a gravel driveway, and the man
followed us. We knew we were in trouble now. But the man was
patient as he explained we turned too soon. Lauren did a
magnificant job getting turned around in this space on this
hillside, and the young man, Josh, had us follow him back in the
right direction. It's been a long time since I've lived here -- a
long time since I've been to this house. I don't recognize it
right away, so it's easy to get lost.
As I saw Marsha and she saw me, we both started waving both arms
-- we made it, we made it, we made it! I asked her if this was
the campground with the city water (something new for her in the
last five years) and we made great fun over it all. How exciting.
I will spend some time with my dear cousin.
