| WEEK ONE | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| The class will watch the United Streaming Video: All About Neighborhoods: Colman Communications Corp (1997). The teacher will read-a-loud the book Busy People, Butterworth, Nick (1986). Discussions will focus around parents and their careers. Learning will take place during centers. Writing Center -- Student's will create an individual book about people they know. Using the template ____________ is a _________. What does ____________ do? Then write a sentence about what the said person does. Reading Center -- Students will read the book Community Helpers from A to Z, Kalman, Bobbie (1998) and create their own book -- Community ABC (Make Your Own Emergent Readers -- Around the Community -- Frank Schaffer Publications. Art Center - Students will create a person book, to be used with writing center prompt. Computer Center - Attainments Word Wise -- Community words, practice, match and take quiz. | WEEK TWO | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| The class will watch the United Streaming Video: Moving The Mail - Postal Employees at Work. Rainbow Educational Media, Inc. (1994). The teacher will read-a-loud the book The Post Office Book, Gibbons, Gail (1982). A field trip will be set up to visit the Post Office; The digital Camera will be used to document the field trip. Learning will take place during centers. Writing Center -- Student's choose a classmate, and write a friendly letter to that person. (I will use name sticks, so that all students get a letter.) Student will put in envelope, and address the envelope. Reading Center -- Students will read the book The Jolly Postman, Ahlberg, Janet & Allan (1986) and create their own book -- Grandma's Letter (Make Your Own Emergent Readers -- Going Places -- Frank Schaffer Publications. Art Center - Students will create paper sack mailboxes, to be used with writing center activitiy. (Also could be used for daily note writing.)Computer Center - Student's will answer the question of the week using Writers Block on the Fun Brain web page http://fun.funbrain.com/cgi-bin/wall.cgi?A1=s. At the end of the week the students will use the photos from their field trip and create a class book about the field trip. | The class will watch the United Streaming Video: Sound the Alarm - Fire Fighters at Work. Rainbow Educational Media, Inc. (1994). The teacher will read-a-loud the book Fire, Fire Said Mrs. McGuire, Martin, Bill (1996). A field trip will be set up to visit the Fire Department; The digital Camera will be used to document the field trip. Learning will take place during centers. Writing Center -- Student's will use a graphic organizer to write 5 silly - Who, What, & Where sentences about cows to be put in their flipbook. Reading Center -- Students will read the book I'm A Fire Fighter, Packard, Mary (1995) and create their own book -- Helping Hands (Make Your Own Emergent Readers -- Around the Community -- Frank Schaffer Publications. Art Center - Students will illustrate their cow flipbook, to be used with writing center activitiy. (Also could be used for daily note writing.)Computer Center - Student's will explore the Sparkey the Dog web page: http://www.nfpa.org/sparky/.They will ask Sparky a question: http://www.nfpa.org/sparky/ask.html, and play an on-line fire safety game: http://www.largetech.com/Fireman.html. At the end of the week the students will use the photos from their field trip and create a class book about the field trip. They will also select a couple of the pictures and send electronic postcard's to our sister class in Rapid City, SD. |
