Good News and Bad News

The good news is that Obama is expected to sign an executive order to close Gulag Gitmo and ban torture, soon after taking office.

The bad news is that it may take months to carry out, and may get displaced in the rush to deal with economic issues.

In other good news, the Bush-Cheney Cabal have only a few days left in power. The bad: Obama has dashed any hope of prosecuting the outgoing thugs for their numerous war crimes and intrusions against constitutional law.

Cheney practically thumbed his nose at the nation as he proudly recounted his criminal activities in a recent interview, while Bush seemingly did everything possible to ensure that no one forgets his misdeeds either. Still, I did not really expect the Obama administration to pursue justice. There must be great reluctance for presidents to stand in judgment of their predecessors – with all the interwoven relationships and hidden agendas in government politics, one never knows what might come back later to bite them in the posterior. As Nixon once said regarding the Bay of Pigs, "We don't want to open that can of worms...".

Now the primary concern has got to be the “crisis” that Biden and Powell foretold for the new administration. Will it be a wider conflagration in the Middle East? India and Pakistan? New tensions with Russia? We may soon get an inkling as to whether we have simply replaced one warmonger president for another. Stay tuned.
