In Honor of Daniel Pearl
photo
My TV Production students are blowing me away. After showing them a power point presentation I created on Daniel Pearl, they are now filming a tribute to this amazing man. The footage is marvellous -- adorable little ones, silly teens, and grandparents whose faces reflect their past. I'm honored to be a part of this project.

I remember when Daniel Pearl was kidnapped. I learned he was married, and his wife was carrying their first child. I was horrified; how could someone kidnap such a nice guy? I saw his wife Marianne plead for his release, with such dignity and love. Surely he would be okay. . .

Then, the news of his murder; just thinking about his wife and child made my chest hurt. How do you live with this?

Seemingly inevitably, the pictures of his execution appeared online. Is this freedom of speech? Is this necessary? It seemed too cruel; yet so do the horrible sad pictures of the Holocaust survivors in the camps. Which MUST be seen.

I refused to watch any of the videos of Daniel Pearl's death. Unfortunately, while doing a safe search for pictures for my power point, I did see one photograph of the journalist, collapsed face down on the ground. I hated it! He looked like a bundle of clothes or a sack of potatoes. Why even take that picture?

I try to remember this beautiful man as he sat on film for his captors, sending an "I love you" sign to his wife with one hand while the other is giving his captors the finger. It's very subtle, but there if you look. What chutzpah! I remember him by his writing and his mischievous smile. And by his beautiful wife, Marianne, and their son, Adam.
