Notes for Anne Kunkel:
   The St. Cloud Photo News (morning edition) of December 7, 1964 did a story about Anna. Originally from New York City, Anna's mother died and her father remarried. His new wife did not want any girls. Anna was sent to the New York Foundling Home. Her sister was older and was sent out to work and had quit school while in 5th grade. When Anna was 5 years old, between 300 and 400 "orphan" children were put on a train to find new homes. Some children were as young as two months old. Each had a little bag with a tin cup, plate, fork and spoon. The train traveled into Canada and then into Minnesota. The train stopped at larger cities and people would come and pick out children to adopt. The Kunkel family had only one daughter and chose to adopt Anna. When they adopted Anna, the family spoke only German and Anna spoke only English. The family welcomed Anna with a new doll. They had quite a time of it. When she was 26 years old, Anna found her natural sister. The story in the St. Cloud Photo News resulted from a reunion of the train children that was held in St. Cloud.
   As many as 35,000 children were placed in new homes via the "Orphan Trains". The trains were the idea of Methodist Minister Charles Loring Brace, founder of the Children's Aide Society of New York. Some children found themselves riding the train more than once. Janet Liebl wrote a book entitled "Ties That Bind, the Orphan Train Story in Minnesota".
