Winter barn header

There was once a man who did not believe in God and was not afraid to express his opinion on religion. He had a wife who, despite his contemptuous comments, tried to raise children in the Christian faith. One snowy Christmas, she'd take the kids to church. She encouraged him too, but he said, "I have heard many times that Jesus was born in Bethlehem!" And he stayed home.

Meanwhile, a strong snowstorm broke out outside. This man heard a strong thump, something hit the window of his house. And again. He looked out, but nothing could be seen for a meter.

When it eased a little, he went out to see what might have caused the impact. Near the house, in a field, he saw a flock of wild geese. Apparently they were on their way south when they got caught in the blizzard. They got lost and settled on his farm without food or protection. They just flapped their wings and circled low around his field, blindly and aimlessly. Several of them seem to have hit his window. He felt sorry for them, and thought the barn would be a great place for geese now. It is warm and safe, they could wait the night there. So he went out and opened the barn door wide, but the geese were still fluttering aimlessly and did not seem to see the barn or what it meant to them.

Then they tried to get their attention to themselves, but they got scared and flew away. So he went home, got some bread, and with crumbs made the way to the barn. Nothing geese. The man became more and more nervous, he bypassed them, wanting to scare them straight to the barn, but then the geese got scared and ran in all directions. Nothing could direct them to the safe barn.

"Don't they understand that I want to help them?" he asked himself. He thought for a moment and realized that wild geese wouldn't follow you. "If I were a goose, I could save them!" - he thought. Then he had an idea. He entered the barn and, taking one of his geese on his shoulders, walked around the flock of wild geese. Then he let her go. The goose flew straight through the herd and straight to the barn - then and the wild geese, one by one, followed her to safety.

The man stood silent for a moment when suddenly his earlier thought spoke again: "If I were a goose, I could save them!" Then he remembered his words to his wife, "Why would God want to be like us? That's ridiculous!" Suddenly it all made sense: that's what God did! We were like those wild geese, lost and perishing. God gave His Son, who became like us, to show us the way and save us! So that was the meaning of Christ's birth!

As the snowstorm calmed down, his soul calmed down and meditated on this wonderful thought. He understood why Christ came as a man. Years of doubt and disbelief vanished like a passing storm. He fell on his knees and prayed with his first prayer: "Thank You, God, that You passed in human form and pulled me out of the darkness and storms of life.
