| History 1. Before theaters, there were only traveling road shows. 2. In 1576, London agreed to lease property outside of London for a theater. 3. In 1577, all theaters were shut down because of "scandalous performances." 4. The globe was later built on the south side of London. 5. The Globe opened in 1599 but was destroyed by fire in 1613, during a performance of Henry VIII. 6. A second Globe was built and was successful until 1644 when the new Puritan Government ruled that plays were immoral. Performances 1. Purely entertainment. Time was meant for socializing. 2. Cost one pence (penny) 3. The poor stood in "The Pit." The rich were able to sit on the upper levels. 4. A white flag was flown to indicate that a performance was being played. Phrases still used 1.
