| What is an SAI? | ||||
| Sigma Alpha Iota is an honorary women's music fraternity which has Alumnae and Collegiate chapters internationally. We are a sisterhood based upon Greek mythology and Cristianity, bound by a love and appreciation for music. We were founded on June 12, 1903 at the University of Michigan School of Music in Ann Arbor. Our seven founders described the founding of SAI as being: "when seven enthusiastic girls solemnly pledged themselves to help each other with sisterly affection, stand for the highest possible musical scholorship, for nobility, and uprightness of character, for the maintenance of friendly and unselfish relations among women in the musical profession" SAI takes part in many activities. Some examples are the building and matinance of the MacDowell Colony, a place for composers to go and work and relax. Another philanthropical program is the Bold Note program, established to print music for the visually impaired. We also work in conjunction with other musical organizations, such as MENC (Music Educators National Confrence) and MTNA (Music Teachers National Association) |
