Loststar TowerCut off from humanity, and with only a few members of the original chieri race left, the tribes were in danger of descending into barbarism. A place was needed for the training of the young in the laran and the matrix sciences, as well as in the languages, arts, and ways of their nearly-extinct forbears. Loststar is a Tower populated mostly by members of these chieri/human tribes in the Hellers. It was founded during the Ages of Chaos, but has been abandoned from time to time because of the laran wars that plagued Darkover and a lack of chieri staff. The secrecy of the Tower and its location was a factor in this second problem.
Currently, however, Loststar operates with a full complement of workers. This is partially because its current Keeper, who is part Comyn, has admitted some of the children of Hastur and Cassilda to the fold. There have also been several new students admitted for training in the past year, and several guests-in-residence. During her term, Lirielle has also installed Renunciate guards for the protection of the Tower.
Lirielle is still a chieri "teen". She has a touch of the Aldaran Gift along with the powerful chieri laran. She possesses some knowledge of the medical applications of matrix screens and the interdimensional sciences. Unlike conventional Comyn keepers, she travels without a veil and there is no air of detachment around her.
Kyrrdis, a half-chieri, spent the earliest part of his life being raised by the Terrans, then fostered in the Yellow Forest until he reached adulthood. He received his earliest instruction in the matrix sciences at Arilinn Tower. Later, he discovered Loststar and has worked in the tower from time to time, interspersed with visits to ancient chieri sites. He can translate ancient chieri scrolls the others cannot read, and is interested in the ancient chieri technology. He is very good with telekinetics, pyrokinetics, and teleportation. Recently, he married Stefana Hastur of Elhalyn (see below); they are expecting a child.
Gareth is the 'mad scientist' of the Tower. He has a tendency to try using his inventions with the circle before testing them out, preferring to trust in his precognition (which isn't as good as he thinks it is).
Ludovic is a human with the Alton donas. He is in his forties and keeps the Tower library. He is a fatherly individual who spends a lot of time keeping "the kids" out of trouble.
An older chieri with the Ardais gift. He is often impatient with "the kids", but is very intelligent and knows something of the Tower's history. He is sort of a crabby uncle for the Circle.
Elspeth is a young chieri currently shifting into male phase due to his love for Kareena. He plays musical instruments very well, but should not be allowed to sing under any circumstances! Elspeth keeps the pharmacy and is a better chemist than singer.
A young chieri woman who loves mathematics and astronomy. She also enjoys dancing, making colorful dresses, and gossiping with Elspeth.
A human woman who has the Ridenow donas. She is somewhat maternal and enjoys cooking for the rest of the Tower staff.
A young chieri who wants to be an artist. A bit dreamy and tends to put his foot in his mouth on occasion. He also enjoys drinking more than any chieri should.
Stefana was brought to Loststar as the result of an "unfortunate laran accident" Kyrrdis had. Before that, she was the Keeper of Isoldir Tower during the time of the Hundred Kingdoms and specialized in aircar construction. Part-chieri herself, she possesses the Elhalyn Gift and a touch of the Ardais donas. She and Kyrrdis married recently and are expecting their first child.
Yanira has been too ill to work in the Circle, but her health is improving. She is a half chieri and a virgin Keeper trained in the old way. She is Kyrrdis' cousin on the chieri side.
Corwyn is interested in joining the Tower. With a Drytowner father, he has had difficulty finding a place where he can fit in. He is mute but has very strong telepathy, especially with birds, banshees and the like. Before his arrival at Loststar, he worked as a healer and message-sender in Arilinn Village.
Eileen is Lirielle's cousin, and is being trained in the Tower. She has precognition and weather laran among her other gifts. She is bold, independent, and strong-willed, like most mountain nobility.
Cassie is a half-chieri child who is somewhat of a mystery to the adults of the Tower. A chieri foundling, she views the Tower circle as her new family. She has strong connections to the Overworld and Lirielle is training her personally.
Rachel is a part-chieri child Kyrrdis and Stefana helped rescue from a group of renegade Terranan. They were holding her captive while they studied her laran. The couple became her foster-parents after their marriage. Rachel is very good with telekinetics and clairvoyance; she never gets lost.
Darna is Rachel's grandmother and her only known blood relative. She is lame and very elderly.
Maibrie, the Lady of Aldaran, recently sent a detachment of Guardsmen to protect Loststar from assault. They reside in a barracks next to the Tower, unlike the Renunciates.
