Rei was created through genetic engineering to replace Yui in Commander Ikari's life. The first version of her was a little girl, who followed Ikari. She repeated harsh words spoken by Ikari, to Dr. Akagi, who was sleeping with him at the time. Akagi, enraged, cholked the young Rei, and then commited suicide.
Later, another Rei was created, this time in teenage form. She became the pilot for Eva Unit 00, and although she is extremely quiet, and makes friends only after being ordered to, she was always quite close with Commander Ikari.
