When Asuka was very young, her mother was mentally ill. She would talk to a doll that she thought was Asuka, but not to Asuka herself. Then one day she committed suicide, and also ripped up the Asuka doll, thinking that she and her daughter would die together. This left Asuka tramatized.
She was adopted by her new parents from Germany, and was eventually chosen to be an Eva pilot. She became very attatched to Ryoji Kaji, who was assigned to her for her trip to Tokyo-3, and became very angry when he and Misato got back together.
Asuka is the most arrogant of the Eva pilots, but is slapped in the face by reality when she first sees the superior skills of her fellow Eva pilots.
