The whole Israel-Lebanon conflict sparked when Hezbollah crossed the Israel border, attacked the bordering villages, and killed/kidnapped several soldiers of Israel. Two soldiers were captured by the Hezbollah political party and three soldiers were killed during the incident. An addition of five Israel soldiers was also killed during a mission to rescue the first two soldiers.
According to the UNDP, an estimated number of 35,000 homes and businesses in Lebanon were destroyed due to artillery and missiles from the other side. Moreover, Lebanons overall economic losses totaled to be at least, if not more, $15 billion.
One of the most severe environmental disaster resulted from the Israeli Airforce bombing the Jiyeh power station. The plants storage tanks leaked over 20,000 ~ 30,000 tonnes of oil into the Mediterranean Sea. The oil contaminated an area of 10km wide surface. This was reported in causing breathing problems, killing fish, increasing the risk of cancer, and endangering many animals.
Nasrallah, the leader of Hezbollah, stated that the two captured soldiers are still alive. He is now trying to use these soldiers as bargaining chips to trade for prisoners of his people in Israel. I strongly believe that both sides should do whatever is possible to fit each others demands so that peace can be achieved.
