Produced by Dreamy Express Zone [DEZ]
Directed by Kan Fukumoto
Ai
and Mai Amatsu are descendants of an ancient Japanese family they are in
possession of powers that allow them to keep hell’s demonic offspring at bay.
One wielding a bow the other wielding a ------ of sorts they fight off
evil sex demons every episode and sporadically get raped it’s just what
you’d expect from a movie of this type [hentai] sex and death in equal
measures but underneath Twin Angels smutty plot and situations lies a
well balanced movie that shows the “talent” [for want of a better word] of
two of the industry’s best adult anime creators.
The
Twin Angels OVA series is based on an earlier anime series called Twin
Dolls [released in 1994 and also produced by DEZ] the series comes in four
parts. Parts 1 and 2 were released
in 1995 and parts 3 and 4 in 1997. The
story for all four parts is essentially the same the Lord of the Pleasure
Underworld wants to kidnap a young Prince under Ai and Mai’s care in order to
turn him [the Prince] into the rightful leader of the Pleasure Underworld.
In order to do such a deed the Lord Of the Pleasure Underworld employs
many a demon to capture the Prince and dispose of Ai and Mai once and for all.
This usually involves members of their class getting captured and raped
while Ai and Mai are rescuing their friends the Prince is captured and so they
then have to save him occasionally they get captured and then a samurai-style
hero [] comes to rescue them.
The
story is limited for the most part but extends in interesting directions such as
the Angels’ grandmother dying and their quest for revenge or Ai’s secret
longing for her sister [!] sometimes it all becomes just a bit much as the
episodes are completely uncensored the plotlines and scenarios rarely leave
anything to your imagination and in this sense the movie is flawed and becomes
quite pornographic however it surprises you with the fact that the lead
characters show emotion this is nice to see in a hentai movie because in
general these details are dropped to fit in more sex.
The
designs are quite well done especially for the female characters but I guess
that goes without saying! In the
first two volumes the bad guys seem quite one-dimensional though and are quite
average in design it is when Karma and Sutra are introduced [Volumes 3 and 4]
that the bad guy character design comes to a head. These characters drip with decadence and help portray the
corruptness of the Pleasure Underworld splendidly. The principle characters are above average as well Ai is the
more serious of the two and so she has a longer skirt and is generally better
kept Mai is more fun loving and has shorter hair and a pleasant carefree look
about her. The Prince reminds me of
Son Gohan from Dragon Ball Z and I presume this is because he was
designed during DBZ’s golden years and hence would have been influenced
by Toriyama-san’s art. The
designers have done a better than average job on creating heroes and villains
and this helps set Twin Angels apart from La Blue Girl or Venus
5 while maintaining the smut of both it’s wonderful! [From a design point
of view.]
In
terms of animation Twin Angels was produced quite cheaply [initially] the
animation in the first two volumes is average at best there are no fancy effects
and although the frame rate is smooth it still appears to look weak.
The colour pallet is poor and at times the animation only moves at 3-4
frames a second [it reminded me of Pocket Monsters at some points]
however things begin to look
up for DEZ in Volumes 3 and 4 the effects become a lot better and the animation
becomes cleaner characters also benefit from retouch and re design [seemingly I
may be wrong.] However I’ll trust
my good judgment and say that “yes” the animation does improve.
Sound
is the dodgiest part of Twin Angels bad music is accompanied by bad
translation and dubbing. The sound
effects become tedious pretty quickly as well there’s only so much times you
can hear a man dipping his hand into some mayonnaise [if you know what I mean.]
There is some fun to be had in the ending theme song that bizarrely
states: “My love for you is like the cactus you left behind, my love is
thirsty for water.” I don’t quite know what to make of that but…
it’s a bit of comic relief I guess
I
would recommend you see this movie it is an interesting piece of work even
though it is a hentai movie it still contains enough action and humor to
appeal to people outside a niche market.
