In
1997 Pink Pineapple released three average hentai movies Idol of
Darkness, Alien of Darkness and lastly Mission of Darkness.
Together these movies form The Darkness Series.
Once heralded by Japanese press as “average” now heralded by me as
quite simply hilarious. Be warned
though it’s more of a dark comedy and only a select few will find this kind of
thing laugh out loud hilarious. To be honest I was quite skeptical seeing the Mission Of
Darkness’s opening scene the novelty of a spaceship shaped like a penis
wore off rather quickly and the movie appeared to be quite stale.
That
is until it started getting very funny indeed it appears the artists at Pink
Pineapple are quite fond of Elton John as he makes a guest appearance trying to
stop a sex crazed bug thing and yes, there are tentacles a-go-go. Although this is
in spirit a hentai it is quite soft in comparison to other movies in
the genre there is no nasty “inside” shots and the sex scenes are very
short. The character designs in the
first episode are tolerable [although over exaggerated] and the action scenes
are well-directed and fluid enough to watch the whole way through the 40-minute
episode. So one thumb up!
The
second episode Idol of Darkness is definitely the weakest of the
three discs this episode is supposed to be a thriller of sorts.
A struggling actress summons a sex fiend to take down her rival and yes,
yet again there are tentacles a plenty. It’s hard to tell what the director is
trying to do with this episode in one sense it’s a schlock psychological
thriller but it fails miserably at this and it’s not supposed to be a comedy
like episode 1? The mind boggles. The
designs in this are weak particularly the older actresses assistant who looks
like Chris Evans I did not find this as funny as Elton more disturbing
than anything else the sex scenes in this episode are a bit dirtier with
lickings of feet and what not but nothing disturbing it’s still pretty tame.
The movie ends with a tender love scene between the principal character
[the older actress’s rival] and her long lost love it’s quite sweet in a
sickening way quite sick in a sweet way if you catch my drift. So a thumb down
for Idol too cute to be interesting too mixed up in its direction to
appeal as much as Mission or Alien.
The
third and final episode in the series is Alien Of Darkness and believe me
Pink Pineapple saved the funniest till last surprises come from every corner in
the final part. And all of the
designs are clean and acceptable even to the most cynical of viewers.
The story is not the strongest point of the movie although the plot
twists are fun [but predictable] it’s the sisterly relationship between two of
the main characters that impresses most when one is injured the other risks her
life to save her quite valiantly it’s all very touching indeed.
The animation in Alien is the cleanest of all the characters do
have a lot of [lesbian] sex though most of which could have been avoided however
the action and story with stand the smut quite well indeed leaving you with a
very entertaining and novel anime. So another thumbs up leaving that at two
thumbs rather than three [hmmm should have thought about that one.]
To
summarize The Darkness Series is not going to be for everyone my humble
opinion may differ from others, it definitely differs from other members of
staff who would say that these movies are awful nothing more nothing less but
I’ll stick my ground and give it a six. Let’s
see how they react to that, they may tell me where to put my newfound third
thumb…
