An African terrorist organisation successfully wipes out most of the 108 Dragons table of representatives. However they made one fatal mistake. They didn’t kill Freeman. Trailing them to their hideout he successfully dispatches them and gets some loving on the way. Meanwhile his wife is busy travelling to Hong Kong in order to learn how to wield a blade. The usual mix of sex and violence is here but something’s different.
Do I even have to mention the fact that the animation is bad? I thought not. If you’ve read the other reviews of Part 1 and 2 you know what to expect from Part 3 in terms of animation at least. I said that there was something different about this volume earlier and now I’m going to explain what I meant. For the first time Crying Freeman is showing some heart! You’ll be surprised just how passive this volume is in terms of violence in fact someone is even thwarted through the medium of TLC. Not only this but the big fight at the end never happens instead it’s all resolved because of Freeman’s love for his wife.
And for once the music is of a presentable level there’s a good vocal track at the end and some nice singing to be heard courtesy of an old sword master. Not only this but there’s some nifty Chinese dialogue thrown in there to make it all seem more authentic.
It appears that Toei is finally pointing Crying Freeman in a good direction. Could this be the volume that saves the series from the depths of mediocrity? We’ll have to wait and see. Remember there are still 3 volumes to go.
