Crying Freeman OAV #2

Produced by: Toei Animation Co. Ltd.

Directed by: Daisuke Nishio

It’s time for more seinen fun and games courtesy of our friends at Toei and their most corrupt of franchises Crying Freeman.  In brief this means more sex than Amsterdam and enough blood to put Tarantino to shame.  It seems Yo [the Crying Freeman of the title] has stumbled on a sinister plot devised to break up the 108 Dragons and eliminate him once and for all.  Luckily for him this doesn’t take much brains to unravel and in the end boils down to Yo killing bad men [and women] in well-choreographed fight scenes.

As with the first OVA the animation leaves a lot to be desired and although not reaching the same abominable levels of crudity as Makyu Senjo it does make for some unpleasant watching.  The director, seems to have taken a unique approach to the action genre in that he feels that the action should not move in order to express movement [if you catch my drift] often we’re served still pictures rather than fluid animation.  This adds up to some frustrating viewing and lowers the standard of the show.

The sound is still shoddy in all aspects from the poor dubbing right on through to the lacklustre eighties synth-pop.  Then again the only reason a lot of people would even think of watching this series is for the erotic elements. Unfortunately for these people things aren’t good in this department either, while it seems a lot of care has been put into the overall sexiness of the character designs, the actual sex scenes are painful however and the scenes featuring Freeman’s wife and an incredibly obese servant won’t get the blood flowing either.

So Part 1 was good for what it was and Part 2 falls nicely into that description too however the series is already showing signs of becoming very tiresome indeed.
