When it comes to sexual identity here at Dark Muffins, most of us live by one rule: Life is fun. For those of you who aren't familiar with the term, 'cross-play' is when a person cosplays as a member of the opposite sex. Sometimes this is done out of necessity, like when Kathy crossplayed as Prince Diamond or when Kyory crossplayed as D. We have more female members than male, and when a skit calls for much with the men, one of us girls must step up and take the challenge. But then sometimes, one simply feels the need to step out of one's mortal shell and have some funkin' fun with cosplay. The most famous DM example of this would be when Stephen put all Sailormoon cosplayers to shame with his rendition of Skanky Sailorvenus. It was a skank that will live in infamy. Join us now as we take a look at crossplaying in the realm of the Dark Muffins.
Hall Costumes:
My very first cosplay: Duo Maxwell. So very easy. So very...male.
I'm willing to bet that Drew spends a lot of his free time wishing this picture doesn't exist. No, your eyes are not deceiving you. Drew is dresses as KAORU from Kenshin. Be afraid. Be insanely afraid.
Here's our very own Black Moon Sista', crossplaying as Maron from Bakuratsu Hunters. Yeah, I thought it was an interesting character choice, too.
Messiah:
Kathy crossplays as the Arch-Angel Urial who is currently seducing Alexiel. Damn Kathy and her damn seductions!
Not many realize it, but Lauren is also crossplaying. Rosiel, while incredibly feminine, is actually Alexiel's brother, the Inorganic Angel. His beauty is attributed to the fact that he's wearing Alexiel's skin.
Anime Moulin Rouge:
The crossplay to end all crossplays. Our good friend Stephen has only graced the DM stage once, as Sailorvenus in our Anime Moulin Rouge. All other comments speak for themselves.
Although nowhere near as...flamboyant, Patrick was also crossplaying on the Katsucon 8 stage. Here he is strutin' his stuff as the Mad Hatter from Angel Sanctuary.
Bloodlust Gone Wrong:
Ah, my first crossplay as a Dark Muffin.
I mean, I've got the hair and the mad sewing skillz, so there were no objections when we cast a girl as Vampire Hunter D.
This is the only picture I've been able to find of her. Nicole is crossplaying as the J-rocker Kyo and is pin-pointed using playback style arrows and circles.
Bloodlust:
And the finished product of D. I looked damn good, thank you.
And Michelle enters her first crossplay as Bengi, the leader of the three Barbarois. She even cartwheeled. It was adorable.
This cosplay was so violent that it called for zombies. So we called into the ranks and pulled our two girls to play our zombies, one male and one female. Tiffany takes the stage as the notorious 'Male Zombie'.
Sailormoon R:
She was the only crossplay, but she was fabulous. Kathy stole the stage with her rendition of Prince Diamond, capturing the essence of the series, the manga, and the ever shiny Sera-Myu musicals.
Back
Bishoujo Senshi Sailormoon:
Once again, I don the clothes of a man. As Nephrite, the only cross-play in our Katsucon 9 skit, I find myself honored to keep the DM tradition alive. It just wouldn't be cosplay without crossplay.
Feel Like a Woman!:
Ever since Nekocon Flash, Patrick had been planning on crossplaying the infamous Queen Neherenia. Several skit ideas fell through involving the Queen, but AMA-3 finally gave him the opportunity to rock it. You'd be surprised just how many people actually thought he was a woman. It pisses me off really, that Patrick was prettier than I was ^_^.
Contrary to what Cartoon Network would have your believe, FishEye of the Amazon Trio is a man. A very fruity, feminine and GAY man, but a man nonetheless. Nicole was fabulous.
Kathy volunteers for another cross-play as the Trio member, HawksEye. There had to be some minor alterations though, since an open chest on a boy is no problem, but Kathy is rather...not a boy.
You just can't look at Michelle and not say "Awwwww." Then you'd better start running, 'cause she'll kill you. I give Michelle mad props for her BEST HELIOS EVER! It was gorgeous. She even had the horn ^_^.
Everybody's Fool:
The saving grace of our Otakon 2003 skit : Tiffany! Despire such other...questionable cosplays in the group (Patrick as Rosiel...actually a guy. Matt as Arakune...also actually a guy...Rose as Sevatharte, actually a girl....Ira as Uriel...yep! Really a dude!) Tiffany is the only true crossplayer, livin' up the role up Katan, minion of Rosiel.
