| Kate stared off into the black music stand while Mr. Kidani rambled on about tennis and fishing. Ken Miyake leaned toward her to whisper something to her. "I just don't see what Kidani's rambling has to do with music." Ken said dryly. "Huh?" Kate said loudly, breaking out of a trance. She lifted up her trombone, hitting it against the bottom of the stand. "Did you two have something to say? Ms. Takata and Mr. Miyake?" Mr. Kidani said loudly, looking up from his podium. He smiled at the fact that he was embarrassing them. Ken blushed and looked down at his instrument. Kate nervously smiled. "No..." Kate and Ken said. Their friends Shannon and Anna from the flute section giggled softly. "You guys are always getting in trouble for talking," Ryu said, leaning over his sax. "Whoops..." Kate said sheepishly. "Jeez..." Ken said, scratching his head. "What were you zoning about? You were staring off into space like a zombie." Kate blushed a deep red. She wasn't going to tell Ryu or Ken, but she was thinking about Bobu. He sat in the back of them and could probably hear every word that they were saying. She had liked him ever since she started taking band. She never really talked to him since she was sort of shy. She was tempted to look back at him to see if he noticed her. "Hello?" Ken said loudly, waving a hand in front of her face. Mr. Kidani irritatedly looked up from his podium again. "Can you two please do your flirting elsewhere?" Kidani asked. Kate and Ken blushed again and the entire band room started laughing. Kate began plotting revenge upon Kidani. I'll get that bunghole back. Kate thought to herself. She was so embarrassed. She hoped that Bobu didn't think that she liked Ken. No matter what everyone else thought, she and Ken were just friends. They just happened to be close because they both played the trombone. The school bell rang, announcing that it was time for lunch. Kate quickly packed her intrument away in it's case and whirled around. She collided into someone from behind, causing them both to fall to the ground. "Ow! Sorry!" Kate said apologetically, looking up at the person. She looked up at Bobu's brown eyes and her heart skipped a beat. "It's okay," Bobu said, smiling. Kate nervously smiled back. "Here, let me help you up," Bobu said, grasping her by the wrist. He gently pulled her to her feet. Blushing, Kate looked down to the ground. "Uh...thanks." Kate said shyly, "I have to go...so I guess I'll see you later." "Yeah." Bobu said, picking up his music sheets. "See you in trig next period." Kate hastily shoved her instrument into her locker and rushed over to Shannon. "Oh my gosh," Kate softly exclaimed, frantically waving her hands around. "What?" Shannon asked, zipping up her bag. "Bobu actually talked to me!" Kate said. "Really?" Shannon asked, sitting down on their usual side of the bandroom. "Yeah. He knows that I exist AND he touched my arm!" Kate whispered excitedly. "I'm never washing this arm again!" "Don't over-exaggerate." Shannon laughed rolling her eyes. "I want to talk to him again," Kate said. "Then talk to him." Shannon replied. "But I'd be too nervous." Kate said, "I need moral support." "Fine. I'll go with you whenever you want to talk to him, okay?" Shannon asked. Kate eagerly nodded. ***** Shannon rolled her eyes. She was used to having Kate obsess over every little thing about Bobu. She wondered to herself what was so great about him . He didn't seem to be that exciting. In fact, she thought that Kate looked cute with Ken. They were always flirting. Shannon was wondering if Ken was ever going to ask Kate out. They both denied that they didn't like each other, but everyone knew that there was some sort of attraction going on. Shannon just wished that Kate would forget about Bobu and start liking Ken. ***** Kate happily smiled to herself. She liked Bobu so much. She had a feeling that Shannon was making one of her 'just go out with Ken instead of like Bobu' looks again. Didn't Shannon ever quit? What was Shannon not getting here? Kate had always insisted that there was no attraction whatsoever. However, at that moment, she didn't really care what Shannon thought. All she could think about was Bobu. She just couldn't get over how cute he was. She liked everything about him. ***** Ken watched Kate and Shannon from across the other side of the room. He sat on a chair next to Grant and Wayne. He looked at Shannon studying what looked like Physics notes. He really admired her dedication to her schoolwork Ken had a feeling that he sort of liked Shannon. The bad thing was that he thought that Shannon might think that he likes Kate. Ken made a face. That was so gross. He wouldn't ever like Kate in a million years. They were just friends. He wondered to himself if he would ever have a chance with Shannon. Looking at Kate, he saw her reading a book. He saw Ryu sitting next to Blanka and Guile. Ken had noticed Ryu glancing at her ever so often. Maybe Ryu likes Kate. Ken thought to himself. Ken had a feeling that Kate liked someone else, but he couldn't tell who. He looked aroaund the bandroom. He could probably tell what all of the guys were thinking at that moment, but he couldn't figure out the girls. Ken rolled his eyes. Why did girls have to be so confusing? ***** "Okay, are you ready?" Shanon asked Kate. Kate nodded as she looked at Bobu. �Let�s go for it.� Kate declared. They both walked up to Bobu. �Hey.� Bobu said, nodding to both of them. �What�s up?� �Nothing much.� Kate said shyly. �I�m dying.� Shannon said. �I still have to study for AP European history. His quizzes are killers!� �Really?� Bobu asked. �You have Peterson too?� �Yeah.� Shannon said, smiling. �Wow. Maybe we could study together some time.� Bobu suggested. �I�m thinking about taking that course next year.� Kate said. �You s hould do it.� Shannon and Bobu both said at the same time. They laughed. �Well...I have to go to my next period.� Bobu said. �I�ll see you guys around.� �Bye.� Kate and Shannon said. ***** Bobu briskly walked towards his next class. He smiled to himself. That Kate and Shannon were really nice. He wondered if Kate liked Ken. They would make such a great couple. He had liked her when she first got involved in band, but then he saw her talking to Ken. That was when he realized that he didn�t have a chance with her. He had seen that she and Ken liked each other. The junior prom was coming up. Ken and Kate were probably going together. Maybe he would ask out Shannon. She seemed like a pretty cool person... ***** Shannon watched Bobu leave. She never thought that she would actually notice that Bobu looked pretty good up close. She even liked his laugh. She shook her head when she realized what she was thinking. This is Bobu that I�m thinking about here. He�s a dork and Kate likes him. I would never be interested in a guy who my friend liked. She looked at Kate happily opening her combination lock. I wouldn�t try to steal Bobu from her...But then why do I feel so funny? ***** Kate opened up her locker to take out her Physics book. She wondered to herself why Shannon had acted so weird around Bobu. It was almost as if Shannon was flirting with him. Kate wondered to herself if Shannon could possibly like Bobu. Shaking her head, She decided that it wasn�t possible. She knew that Shannon would never do such a thing to her. ***** Ryu nervously stared at the phone. He wasn�t sure if he really wanted to call Kate. Sure, he had chatted with her on the phone for hours before, but it had never been about such a serious subject. He was actually going to ask her out to the prom. Kate was one of his closest friends. In fact, she was his best friend. He had confided in to her about everything. Everything, that is, except about his feelings for her. The big problem was that Ryu had a feeling that Kate didn�t like him as anything more than a friend. He was sure that Kate had a crush on Ken. Everyone was always talking about the two of them as if they were a real couple, but Kate had always told Ryu that she wasn�t going out with Ken. Well this was the final moment. He had to know who she liked. Crossing his fingers, Ryu picked up the phone. ***** Kate was doing her trigonometry homework when the phone rang. She had her earphones on, listening to her Everclear CD, so she didn�t hear her little sister, Kay pick up the phone. �Hey!� Kay said, standing in the doorway. �Huh?� Kate said, looking up from her textbook. She took off her headphones. �It�s your boyfriend!� Kay exclaimed, making a face. �Don�t be so immature.� Kate retorted. �You know that I don�t have a boyfriend.� Kay ran off, taunting, �Kate�s in l~ove! Kate�s in l~ove!� Sighing, Kate picked up the phone. �Hello?� Kate asked. �Uh, hello?� Ryu said on the other line, sounding a bit embarrassed. �Oh, hi Ryu.� Kate said, starting to smile. �Don�t pay any attention to Kay. She�s such a little brat.� �Uh yeah...so I was wondering...� Ryu started, sounding incredibly nervous. �Are you going to the prom?� Kate was silent. She wasn�t sure. She was hoping that Bobu would ask her out to go to the prom. �Um...I�m not sure.� Kate said. �Oh. Would you want to go with me?� Ryu asked. �Huh?!� Kate asked loudly. �What did you say?!� �Uh, it was just a question, I mean...if you don�t want to...Uh, do you wanna go to the prom...just as friends?� Ryu stuttered. �Oh, I�m sorry Ryu, but I was kind of hoping that someone else would ask me.� Kate guiltily replied. �I hope I�m not disappointing you.� �Oh...no...you�re not.� Ryu said, sounding a bit depressed. �We�re still friends right?� Kate asked. ��Cause you�re still my very best friend. I feel like I can tell you anything.� �Really?� Ryu asked. �Yeah. You�re the best.� Kate said. �We�re still going to see a movie tomorrow night, right?� �Oh yeah.� Ryu said. �Well, I really have to go study for my trig class.� Kate said. �Okay, bye.� Ryu said. �Bye.� Kate said. ***** Ryu slowly placed the receiver back on the headset. So it was true, he thought. Kate really did like Ken. A feeling of dull rage sizzled deep in his chest. He had to admit that he was jealous. Oh well...he might as well tell Ken to ask Kate out to the prom. At least she would be happy. ***** Ken was lying down on his bed, gazing at his GLAY posters when the phone rang. Stumbling to get out of bed, Ken rolled off. Picking himself up to his feet, he answered the phone. �Hel...whoa!� Ken said, as he nearly tripped over the phone cord. �Uh, hello?� �Ken?� Ryu voice came out of the receiver. �Ryu?� Ken asked. �Is that you?� �Yeah...� Ryu said, laughing at Ken�s cluelessness. �Oh. So...what?� Ken asked, sounding a bit confused. �I think you should ask Kate out to the prom.� Ryu said really fast. �Huh?� Ken interjected. �Why?! I always had the impression that you liked her. Don�t you?� �That�s none of your business.� Ryu angrily snapped. �But do you?� Ken asked. �You should go with her.� Ryu answered. �But do you like her?� Ken repeated. �Go with her to the prom!� Ryu exclaimed. �But I don�t even like her!� Ken shouted. �Oh, that�s bull shit!� Ryu yelled. �It�s so obvious that you like her.� �No...� Ken said slowly. �I think that I like Shannon.� �Well Shannon thinks that you like Kate. Anyway Shannon will never come near you if you hurt Kate. You�ll never get to know her.� Ryu explained. There was silence on the other end. �I suppose so...� Ken said thinking carefully. �But I know for sure that Kate does not like me.� �Yeah, whatever!� Ryu scowled, starting to sound irritated. �Just make her happy. You�d probably be better for her anyway.� �What are you talking about?� Ken asked, worried about Ryu�s tone of voice. Ken heard a loud click followed by the dial tone. Ryu had hung up on him. Ken hung up the phone and sat back on the bed. Something was troubling him. He had never fought with Ryu before. This was his first fight and he didn�t even know what it was about. Pushing away the problem, Ken thought about the prom. �Man! I gotta find something to wear!� Ken exclaimed. �What kind of t-shirts do guys have to wear to the prom?� ***** Back at school, Kate was talking to Shannon and Anna. �I want to ask Bobu out to the prom, but I�m afraid that he�ll say no.� Kate complained. �Don�t worry about it.� Shannon said, trying to persuade Kate into doing it. �It�ll go fine. He seems to like you, anyway.� �As a friend and probably not more than that!� Kate whined. �That�s the problem.� �Just go for it. Don�t be such a wimp.� Anna said. �You can�t hide all your life.� �You should talk!� Kate exclaimed. �Look...� Shannon replied, getting annoyed by Kate�s whining. �If he says no, then he says no. Anna and I know that if you don�t ask, you�ll be moping around, complaining that you will never know.� �Well...� Kate said, sounding skeptical. �Look, he�s right over there.� Anna pointed out. Turning around, they saw Bobu a few feet away, walking towards them. �Go now!� Anna shouted, shoving Kate towards him. �Aah!� Kate yelled, flailing her arms about. She toppled into Bobu, bringing them both to the ground. Anna laughed and ran away. Shannon walked toward them, heaped onto the ground. �Ow.� Kate said, rubbing her head. �Sorry.� Bobu sat up, rubbing his chin. Kate noticed that he hadn�t shaved in a while. She noted to herself that he looked pretty stupid when he didn�t shave. �We really have to stop meeting like this.� Bobu said, smiling. �I am soo sorry.� Kate said, starting to turn red. "I am killing Anna! Kate thought to herself. �You guys are both so clumsy!� Shannon laughed. �It was actually my fault.� Kate admitted. �So Bobu, are you going to the prom?� Shannon asked, winking really big towards Kate. Kate glared at Shannon angrily for being so obvious. �Well I didn�t ask anyone yet...� Bobu said. �Really?� Kate asked. �Yeah. I don�t know who to go with, I mean...it�s obvious that you and Ken are an item.� �We are?� Kate said, raising her eyebrows. �Yeah...� Bobu said, scratching his head. �Ryu told me that you were going to the prom with Ken.� �I am?� Kate asked. �Yeah.� Bobu said. �I was considering asking you, but I found out about you and Ken, and since you and Ken are so compatible...� �We are?� Kate asked, sounding desperately confused. Suddenly, Ken ran over to them. �Hi Kate!� Ken said nervously. Shannon and Bobu raised their eyebrows. �Uh, hi Ken...� Kate said. �Uh...I�m kind of having a conversation right now, so could this wait?� �Oh, well actually I just had one question to ask you.� Ken explained. �What is it?� Kate asked. �Do you want to go to the prom with me?� Ken asked quickly. He nervously eyed Shannon to see her reaction. �Eh?! (Note: �Eh� is �huh� in Japanese.)� Kate said. �Will you go to the prom with me?� Ken repeated. Kate was forming the word �no� on her mouth when she glanced at Bobu and Shannon. Shannon was raising her eyebrows towards Bobu and mouthing the words �say yes�. Bobu was looking at her expectantly. �Uh...uh...� Kate mumbled. �Well?� Bobu said. �Uh...I...guess so.� Kate whispered, feeling miserable inside. Ken smiled and his eyes brightened. �Okay, so I�ll discuss it with you later in band, right?� Ken asked. Kate nodded. Shannon made a sympathetic facial expression. �Well...� Bobu said. �That shows me who Kate�s going out with...Shannon, do you want to go out with me to the prom?� Shannon raised her eyebrows in surprise. Kate suddenly felt very sick to her stomach. �Uh...� Shannon said, eyeing Kate. Kate sighed and looked away, as if implying that Shannon might as well go and have a good time. �Okay.� Shannon replied, sounding a little unsure. �Okay! That�s great!� Bobu exclaimed. �Hey Kate! We can double date!� Kate nervously smiled. �I have a feeling that this is going to be a great prom.� Bobu said. ***** Ryu watched as Ken walked toward him with a smile on his face. Ken happily signed a thumbs up. �She said yes.� Ken said. Ryu plastered a smile on his face. Somehow, he didn�t feel very happy for Ken. �Uh, congratulations.� Ryu said. �Yeaah...� Ken replied. �So now what do I do?� �Just have a good time and casually talk with Shannon.� Ryu replied. �If she likes you, then that�s good, but you can�t force anything.� Ken slowly nodded. �I see what you�re getting at.� �Okay, well...I have to go now.� Ryu explained. �Good luck.� Ken nodded. ***** Shannon rushed to the back of 5-7-9 to look at the prom dresses. Kate glumly followed her into the store. Shannon sure seems happy. Kate thought to herself. Kate wondered to herself if Shannon was lying when she said that she wasn�t really looking forward to going to the prom with Bobu. She seemed to have been flirting a lot with him lately. Kate couldn�t see how she was going to survive through the entire prom with the two of them. She felt depressed whenever she saw them together. Kate couldn�t help but feel betrayed. Shannon had been her friend. She knew that Kate liked Bobu, but she went after him anyway. Kate had always told Shannon how Bobu was her perfect guy. He would probably be a good friend who she could get along with, he was good-looking (-gag-), and she could feel comfortable around him...at least after a while. Bobu seemed to be at ease around her and seemed to consider her a friend. They got along fine. He was sweet, kind, and sensitive. Those were all of the traits that Kate had always looked for in a guy. Kate had constantly told this to Shannon, but now Shannon was the person dating him. Kate wondered to herself if she was being wrong. She wondered if she should be happy for Shannon. Maybe it was just a coincidence that Shannon�s perfect match happened to be the same guy that Kate had been crushing on for the longest time. Shaking her head, Kate dismissed the idea. She couldn�t help with how she felt. She wasn�t sure if she would ever be able to forgive Shannon. Perhaps it�s for the best. At least Shannon is happy. It�s better that at least one of us be happy. Kate thought. I just wish that I could have some happiness too. Kate shook her head again. She was so confused. She just didn�t know. Why did love have to be so complicated? ***** Shannon guiltily looked back at Kate, who was sadly dragging her way over. Shannon felt kind of bad. She knew that Kate had liked Bobu for a long time, but she had to admit...she was really starting to fall hard for Bobu. Maybe I should just forget about him, Shannon thought. I don�t want to betray my friendship with Kate. But then again...why can�t she feel happy for me that I�ve found happiness? Do I have to be unhappy just because she can�t have what she wants? Shannon saw Kate force a smile on her face as she looked at a dark-blue satin dress. What am I talking about here? Kate just got her heart broken. She�s trying to support me and I�m just trashing her. I can tell that she�s really hurting inside. I want to help her, but I don�t want to give up Bobu. I just don�t know what to do. Shannon thought. She purchased a dark-green silk dress with sequins. Kate walked over, holding up the satin dress. �I�m ready.� Kate said. �I�ve got my dress for the prom. It should be a blast.� Will it really be one? Shannon thought to herself as she paid the cashier. ***** Ken stepped up onto Kate�s front porch. He wasn�t sure about this prom thing. His cousin had advised him to wear a black tux of some sort, but Ken felt like he was overly dressed. He had thought that tuxedos were only for weddings. He wasn�t planning on marrying Kate. He carefully adjusted the corsage in it�s box. He wasn�t sure if the white rose would match Kate�s dress. Pressing the doorbell, Ken waited at the porch. Kate peered around the door and nervously smiled. She was wearing a blue satin and silk dress, and her hair was up in some sort of fancy bun thing. Ken thought that she looked better without all of the makeup and stuff. He didn�t get why girls put all of that crap on their faces and did their hair. All he did was wash his face with an antibacterial face wash. He didn�t even bother to brush his hair. It got messed up by the wind anyway. Ken handed Kate the rose. Kate smiled and took Ken�s arm. �Let�s go,� Ken said, courting Kate toward the black limo that he had rented. He felt like Prince Charming or something. It felt pretty cool, but he still didn�t get why everything had to be so fancy. ***** Bobu rang the doorbell. He looked at his watch. He could proudly note that he was right on schedule. Shannon opened the door. Bobu�s mouth opened slightly. He was surprised at how beautiful Shannon looked to him. She was stunning. Bobu felt pretty good about the fact that he was taking her to the prom. He wondered to himself if he was falling for her. He had never really fell in love before. He was just never interested in romance. However, he felt strange when he looked at Shannon. It was like he was in a dream. He couldn�t even remember what Kate looked like. All he could see was Shannon. ***** Kate lounged around at her table. She didn�t really feel like dancing with Ken anymore. He was a good dancer, but she had really wanted to dance with Bobu. She didn�t feel anything when she danced with Ken. In fact, it felt kind of awkward. Ken looked like he felt a little uncomfortable too. She couldn�t understand why the heck he had even asked her to the prom. It was so obvious that they were the least compatible couple at the prom. Shannon and Bobu definitely seemed to be the coziest couple on the dance floor. There was no visible space between them as they slow-danced together. The two of them were staring into each other�s eyes like attracted magnets. They were so lovey-dovey that Kate got sick to her stomach. At one point, it even looked like they were going to kiss on the dance floor. The song changed to I�ll Never Break Your Heart by the Backstreet Boys. Kate rolled her eyes. Sarah or Nicole must have requested the song. Suddenly, Ken got up and started walking towards Shannon and Bobu. �What are you doing?� Kate called after Ken, already following him. She saw Ken tap Bobu on the shoulder. �Uh...� Ken said. �Excuse me, but may I have this dance with Shannon?� Shannon looked at Ken in surprise. She looked up at Bobu. Bobu casually shrugged. �I guess so...� Shannon said, longingly looking back at Bobu. Ken happily smiled and lead Shannon deeper into the center of the dance floor. Kate immediately looked down to the floor. �Sorry about that.� Kate said. �I don�t know what came over Ken.� �That�s okay.� Bobu said. �Uh...do you want to dance?� �Uh...I guess...� Kate said, feeling very nervous. She put her arms around Bobu�s shoulders and they danced. Kate wondered to herself why she felt so out of place and uncomfortable. It didn�t feel as heavenly as she had imagined it to be, but she was still excited. She decided to tell him about her feelings. She would be willing to leave him and Shannon alone once she knew how he truly felt about her. She just had to know this. �Uh, Bobu?� Kate asked. �What?� Bobu said. �I have something to tell you...� Kate said. �What is it?� Bobu asked. �Uh...well...I�ve always really liked you.� Kate quickly admitted, looking down towards her feet. �Huh?� Bobu stuttered. �Why?� �Well, I feel comfortable around you and you seem like a great friend. You seem kind, funny, and really smart. You never give up on what you believe in and will go against the odds to make others happy.� Kate confided. She blushed softly. �Kate,� Bobu said. �You�re not describing me.� �I�m not? What are you talking about?� Kate asked, sounding confused. �You�re describing Ryu. Ryu is your ideal match.� Bobu answered. �At first, Kate was silent. �Wh...What?! Ryu?! No...� Kate declared. �Come on...admit it.� Bobu said. �The only reason that you started liking me was the fact that you saw the �Ryu� in me. You probably didn�t want to ruin your relationship with Ryu, so you went after someone who was like him as the next best thing.� �Ryu...?� Kate said, starting to sound unsure of herself. �Kate, look inside your heart. It�s pretty obvious that Ryu likes you too.� Bobu said. �Go for it and everything should turn out all right.� Kate slowly nodded, feeling a bit dazed. The song ended. Suddenly, there was a loud crashing noise that came from the DJ�s box. �Just play NSYNC!� Sarah screamed at the DJ, bashing the CD on top of his head. Nicole shoved her WWF CD into the DJ�s face. �No...play MY CD!� Nicole exclaimed. �Hurry up!� Sarah shouted, sounding impatient. The DJ timidly put in the NSYNC CD and played a slow song. �Oh goody!� Sarah shrieked, grabbing Zangief by the wrist and dragging him onto the dance floor. �Zangief, this is OUR song now, okay?� Looking a bit scared, Zangief slowly nodded, looking for a way out. Shannon came back with Ken. Ken looked at peace with himself. �Shannon, he�s all yours.� Kate said, shoving Bobu toward her. Shannon raised a skeptical eyebrow at Kate as Bobu wrapped his arms around her waist. �I love you.� Bobu said, deeply looking into Shannon�s eyes. Shannon closed her eyes and buried her head in his shoulder. She sighed and whispered to him, �I love you too.� (Note: Revenge is so sweet.) }:) ***** Ken dropped Kate off after the prom. They both seemed to have a pretty good time. Ken was happy that he was finally over Shannon. When he danced with her, he felt at rest, and suddenly didn�t like her anymore. He hoped that Kate was happy too. Ken happily drove home. ***** Kate was walking toward the band room from Mr. Stauffer�s class. She had decided that this was the perfect day to tell Ryu about how she felt about him. There was no turning back now. She had to tell Ryu immediately. Kate wanted to know how Ryu felt about her. ***** It was after school in the band room. Mr. Kidani had left to run an errand and had put Ryu in charge of the band room. Anna, Shannon, Ken, and Bobu were also hanging out in the bandroom. Ryu miserably watched Ken and Bobu. He had realized that Kate actually liked Bobu. That depressed him even more. He couldn�t figure out what Kate saw in Bobu. At that exact same moment, Bobu looked up at Ryu and smugly smiled. He walked up toward Ryu. �Oh Ryu,� Bobu said. �I have something to tell you about Kate...� Ryu snapped. He couldn�t handle it. It was all so unfair. He didn�t want Kate to like Bobu, he wanted her to like him. Why couldn�t things ever go his way. He thrust his hands up in front of him. �What the hell...?� Bobu said as Ryu sent a gigantic fireball shooting out of his palms. �Aah! Ryu, you idiot!� Shannon screamed, running toward him. Ryu fired too. He turned toward Ken. Ken�s looked surprised. �What?! Ryu, you�re supposed to be my pal!� Ken yelled.
