The Metcalfs: November 1983
Something in the night caused Sam to stir from her dead sleep; maybe it was the fact that she hadnt had more than 2 hours uninterrupted sleep since Nicky was born.  She looked at the clock on the nightstand.  It was nearly 1 A.M., Sam turned the knob on the monitor back to on she quickly did the math in her sleep fogged mind.  That meant its been 5 hours since Nicky fell asleep.  Groggily she looked at the new baby monitor, silently wondering if it even worked.  Sam stood up, noticing that Tommy had yet to return home from his late ball practice in Cleveland, which wasnt abnormal.

She padded down the short hall to the baseball filled nursery.  Before reaching the door she could hear a familiar voice telling a play by play of, what Sam assumed, was tonights practice.  She felt a pang of guilt for missing it.  Unlike all the other baseball wives, Sam enjoyed attending practices & since Sam was the sports writer for River Run Courier no one minded her being there.  & much to Tommys amusement, the other players treated her like one of the guys.   She hated to interrupt Tommy with his son, but she wanted him to know she was standing in the doorway.  When did you get home, Baby?

Around 10, he whispered.  Nick was just waking up & you looked so peaceful, so I thought I would let you sleep.  I changed him & then gave him one of the bottles you had in the fridge.

Sam looked over at the baby monitor positioned to the left of the crib; the red light was off.

Tommy saw Sam looking at the monitor, I was going to turn that back on.  I shut it off so we wouldnt wake you.  Why dont you go back & get some sleep.  Lord knows you havent had much in the last month.

Sam yawned.  I dont mind if I do.  She leaned over & kissed Tommy, then placed a feather-like kiss on her sons forehead. Sam turned the knob on the monitor back to on.  Tommy, eventually you will have to put him in his crib & get some sleep yourself.

Tommy looked like she was suggesting he cut off his right arm.  His face softened to a gorgeous smile. I know, I just hated leaving you two tonight.  Especially just to go workout.  I will be in in just a bit.

Sam turned to go back into her bed.  She heard Tommy start talking to Nicky through the baby monitor.

watching your Papa Jeff play baseball was all I ever wanted to do when I was a kid, that & play ball myself.  I wish you could have seen it, Nicky, it was poetry.  Of course, Mammy Ginger was no slouch in the talent department.  She used to sing to me every night before I fell asleep.  She also used to tell us these great stories about a beautiful princess named Ginny & a wicked witch named Caroline

Sam drifted back off to sleep
