I was inspired to write this story when I got a mail with this teddy and the 'poem'. It seemed to suit the JetC relationship more than well. So I decided to write this little story. I didn't intend to infringe copyrights in any way.
For everyone: YOU HAVE JUST BEEN HUGGED!

THE CHAKOTAY BEAR

There's something in a simple hug
That always warms the heart;
It welcomes us back home
And makes it easier to part.

A hug's a way to share the joy
And sad times we go through,
Or just a way for friends to say
They like you 'cause you're you.

Hugs are meant for anyone
For whom we really care,
From your grandma to your neighbor,
Or a cuddly teddy bear.

A hug is an amazing thing -
It's just the perfect way
To show the love we're feeling
But can't find the words to say.

It's funny how a little hug
Makes everyone feel good;
In every place and language,
It's always understood.

And hugs don't need new equipment,
Special batteries or parts -
Just open up your arms
And open up your hearts.

Once again she was standing in her quarters, looking into the mirror. She knew she wouldn't get younger but during the last weeks her face had changed immensely. The weeks had been full of stress and she had slept less than she should have. And to top it all it was her birthday today. Another year in which she had to find a way home, another year close to Chakotay. Chakotay. The longer she thought about coming home the less she wanted to reach it. The journey could last forever as long as she was close to Chakotay. She was still afraid to tell him how much she was in love with him even though they both knew about their love for each other.
She hoped no one knew about her special day! She slipped into her uniform and shot a last glance at her image in the mirror. She didn't look different than the day before, well, maybe a little more lipstick, a little more make-up to cover the pale color of her face.
"Chakotay to Janeway", his voice broke through the silence.
"Janeway here?"
"I just wanted to know if everything was OK. Your dutyshift started ten minutes ago."
"I'm already on my way", she said, the doors of her quarters closing behind her.She entered the turbolift. A wave of nausea overcame her as the lift made its way to the bridge. The doors opened and she entered the bridge and felt everyone's eyes on her. Her eyebrow rose and suddenly everyone's eyes found something interesting on the screen in front of them. She went to the center of the bridge and sat down in her seat.
"Are you sure, you're alright?" Chakotay asked her in concern.
"Just feeling a little dizzy. Has anything happened I should know about?"
There was the captain again, every feeling hidden behind the facade of command. Only seconds ago he had been sure to see something in her eyes but now there were only these deep blue-gray eyes he stared into. Instead of an answer to her question he shook his head.
She told him that she would be in her ready room if something happened and got up. She swayed as she headed towards her room. The moment the doors to her room opened she collapsed. Chakotay jumped up and ran to her. Everyone's eyes rested on the couple. He cradled her head in his lap and softly pated her face. Slowly she opened her eyes and looked at him. Even though she wore make-up her face looked ashen. Her eyes were like deep lakes in which he would drown if he fell. The pupils were nearly as big as her whole eyes and reminded him strangley of his teddy's eyes.
He helped her up and led her to the sofa in her ready room where she fell down. She looked at him helplessy and apologized with a husky voice. He sank down on his knees in front of her and looked her deep into the eyes. She took his hand and gestured him to sit beside her. As soon as he sat beside her she laid her head down on his chest and she started sobbing. He wanted to ask her what was wrong but didn't dare to. So he only embraced her tightly and gently rubbed her back. He felt his uniform getting soaked with her tears and still he didn't know why she was crying. He lowered his head and inhaled the scent of her hair. It smelled like it had on the evening on New Earth when he had given her a backrub. So many memories, so many happy days. His hand cupped her chin and forced her to look at him. The sobbing had stopped and she simply looked at him. His lips closed over hers and he softly kissed her. She hesitated but then closed her eyes and returned the kiss. When she opened her eyes again she knew that this was his way of telling her that he was in love with her.
"I love you, Chakotay", she whispered.
"I love you too", he whispered back and kissed her again.

She was sitting on her bed, dressed in her pink night-gown, when the doorbell chimed. She called the late visitor to enter. The doors opened and Chakotay stood in the doorframe. He was dressed in dark blue trousers and a white shirt, looked absolutely gorgeous. His hands were hidden behind his back as he entered the room.
"I just wanted to see if everything's OK with you."
"The fact that you're here makes me feel much better than before," she smiled.
One hand still hidden behind his back, he gestured her to sit down on her bed again. He sat down beside her and asked her to close her eyes. He took her hands and placed a fleecy something into one hand and kissed the other one gently. Then he allowed her to open her eyes again. For some seconds he wasn't sure if he had done the right thing, but then she smiled broadly and hugged him. He fell down onto her bed and she laid on his broad frame. And then she kissed him. Oh gods, this woman could kiss. When they parted again she was still holding her present in her hand.
"Chakotay, tell me about this," she asked him and looked at her hands.
"This is a teddy my mother gave to me when I was a small child. He should protect me from bad dreams and comfort me when I was sad. I want you to have him now to forget about the things that made you cry this morning." he softly said to her.
"Oh Chakotay, this is the most beautiful birthday present I ever got!"
she said, then she flushed. Oh no, she had told him!
"Your birthday?" he whispered and caught her in a tight embrace.
"I forgot about it! I'm so sorry."
"I had hoped that everyone would forget about it," she sighed.
"Well, at least one present. It wasn't meant to be a birthday present. I know something better. Get dressed and we go to Sandrine's."
"Oh no! I have a better idea!" she smiled. "Computer reduce light to fifty per cent."
She pulled him back onto the bed and kissed him and told him that this was the best present he could ever give to her: an evening with only the two of them together.
"And my new Chakotay bear is going to watch over us!" She took the bear and placed him onto her nightstand after having kissed its nose.
