I was scanning the web a few
weeks ago trying to relocate my link to Cory Brown's TJ
Central web site when I stumbled over an article on the web
regarding the use of a plastic "restrictor" in the air
tube on a 4.0 Liter YJ. After noting the amount of restriction
in the airbox of my TJ, I decided perform a full inspection of my
XJ's intake to see if it was there.

The first step I took was to remove the airhose running from the
airbox to the throttle body.

Once the airtube was removed, it was time to go after the
"blockage" by pushing on the tabs of the restricting
device located on the exit end of the airbox.

Once the tabs are pushed in, the screwdriver may then be used to
pry the four inch long restrictor out of the airbox far enough to
grab it and pull it out of the system.

And there it is. A very light
weight piece of plastic that serves no other purpose but to
suffocate the Jeep from a lack of oxygen necessary for combustion
.
And the results from my pursuit proved to be
more than surprising. Under hard acceleration I have found it
difficult to keep the tiny 215's planted which has led to my
decision that I am going to replace the tires with a larger size
like a 30X9.50. On the MPG scale, I have not noticed a
difference to date because I am so thrilled with the throttle
response off the line, I sometimes have a hard time restraining
myself from showing the occasional Neon or Civic with "Fart
Pipes" that an old dog can beat some new tricks.
Till
I turn the wrench again,
