| One of the most important things you can do to understand and discuss art is to do your research on what combined elements help to form a quality piece. At left are numerous terms commonly used in discussions of art. Please use the links to sites provided in order to find definitions of these terms. I will be listening for your use of these words in your class discussions. When you begin learning about the different artists later in this lesson, please think about these elements while you peruse the work. Make note of which elements you might like to focus on for your own pieces. |

| Once again, I offer you one of my own works to review and critique now that you are familiar with some of the common art lingo. Please get yourselves into groups of no more than four persons. I want you to begin to discuss how the various elements of art and design are used or left out of this particular piece. Each person in the group should give their own personal input. I will be monitoring the discussions of each group and may join in to prompt you for further conversation. Once you have shared your objective viewpoints, I want you to begin to think about your subjective feelings about this piece. (If you are having troubles understanding what I mean by 'objective' and 'subjective' views, please go here for thorough definitions of these adjectives: Merrium-Webster Online) NOTE: I am looking for the quality of your arguments, not whether or not you like my piece. Please remember that I want you to feel confident enough to state your own opinions--but back up your views with some solid points! Tell me why you feel the way you feel... what works or doesn't work for you? What would change your opinion? Why? Think about what your current ideas of 'good' art are. Is there a reason why you have come to this conclusion? Do you think your opinions might change? Why or why not? |
