Ming Lei's China Doll

China (otherwise known as "The Diva") came to us on Easter Sunday in 1994.  Our excitement was indescribable that day!

She is a smaller, fine-boned shih-tzu with a slightly reserved (for a shih-tzu) personality.  (As you probably know, ALL shih-tzu's love people and will go out of their way to be a member of the neighborhood greeting committee of one!)  China is no exception there, but maintains an aloof and regal demeanor at least part of the time; hence her nickname.

Don't let anyone tell you shih-tzu's are dumb.  China has excelled in both obedience and agility.  If her mother wasn't such a wimp she could easily hold several titles!  China is the perfect example of the diversity of the shih-tzu ... a loving, doting lap dog; a comical, playful companion; an intelligent worker; a fearless watch dog.

Her most memorable activity?  Why, it's chasing dogs, bears, cats, wolves, and especially monkeys off the television set.  Her jumps 2' & 3' into the air to catch these creatures are a sight to behold!!!
You MUST be kidding.  Do I look like a retriever to you?!

         That Brown/Red Doberwoman
Faster than the speed of light she tears across the field
Finding all the silent scents, their secrets now revealed.
A glint of red, the trusty stick, not a worry or a care
Then back to greet her dearest friend - what a very funny pair.

Commiserating howls from her seat beside your own
Join the chorus of her friends - so much better than a moan.
Baby games and tennis balls round out a favorite day;
She wont hesitate to tell you when your foot is in her way!

But all of these and so much more must now be put aside
Because, you see, the day has come when she no longer flies
Across the yard to catch that squirrel, but rather up above.
I hope a smile from Tara will ease her there with love.
Java was China's first best friend.  She was so tender with baby China it was incredible to see.  We lost her unexpectedly to an autoimmune disorder called immune-mediated polyarthritis ... she suddenly couldn't walk, as her immune system attacked her joints. It was devastating to watch the deterioration.  The poem I wrote refers to her favorite games and toys, and to my first dobie, who also died much too young.  It's years later and still makes me cry.
China, Santa (the guy in the red suit) & her buddy Java
And so it all began!  China as a puppy ... and below as a juvenile (9 mos.).
The diva in all her glory
China with our granddaughter, Carleigh, then 2 1/2 yrs. old.
