Goku as you may know was the first of the Z fighters to go Super Saiyan. This happened at the Freeza Saga when he was fighting Freeza and Krillin (his best friend) got killed by Freeza. Goku couldn't take the pain so he raged and became a Super Saiyan. Your hair becomes yellow/gold and you become stronger and quicker. This is the first level of the Super Saiyans.

Gohan (Goku's son) was the first of the Z fighters to go Super Saiyan 2. He went to this stage in the Cell Saga while fighting against Cell in the Cell Tournament. When you reach this stage you get stronger, your hair grows longer and turns gold and you become more quicker. This was one of the reasons why Gohan had defeated the evil Cell.

This stage is one of the best stages. The frist person to reach this stage was Goku, in the Buu Saga when he was fighting Fat Buu. Fat Buu was too strong for Goku so he had a huge rage and turned Super Saiyan 3. At this stage your hair is all the way down to your knees, it is bright and gold and you are much faster and stronger. This stage Goku, Gogeta, Vegito and Gotenks are the only people who reach it.

This is one of the coolest stages to reach, well thats what I think. Your hair (instead of gold) goes black and you have ape hair on your arms! It is a half ape and a saiyan stage. You also have a tail for the Oozouru stage (this only happens when the Saiyans with tails look at a full moon). To reach this stage you have to turn into Oozouru form and concentrate all your energy forward. This is the most powerful and quickest state out of all the levels. The first to reach it was Goku by watching his step daughter (pan) crying. Vegeta reached this stage by Bulma's (Vegeta's wife) time machine Brute. But when Goku SSJ 4 and Vegeta SSJ 4 fuse they become the most powerful force, Super Saiyan 4 Gogeta.

This stage was reached first by Trunks(Vegeta's son), then by Vegeta. They reached this state by training in the Hyperbolic chamber. This is a stage where you are much slower but much stronger and your energy is drained quite quickly, also your hair is grown much longer too. Trunks was the only one to fight in this stage.
