Chapter Two
I lay on my bed that night as the sun set behind the horizon. I was the first back to the barracks that night, exhausted from the beating and the work from earlier that day. The others soon walked in. I didnt bother pay them any attention as they entered. Charlie, Damien, and Vincent came over to me. Terrance however walked past me and towards his bed. Charlie leaned on my bed and looked at me.
Are you alright, Renard? he asked. I could sense worry in his voice. I looked at him and smiled.
Yes Im alright. I answered, though I was still a little sore. Vincent sat down on Damiens bed and looked at me.
I heard about what happened. That was a very brave thing to do. He said. I nodded to him and looked up. Damien sat down on his bed next to Vincent.
Renard, I want to thank you for sticking up for me earlier. You shouldnt have, and I mean that literally. He said to me.
Dont think anything of it What are friends for? I said to him. He half smiled and I looked back up at the ceiling. Damien looked at Vincent and pushed him off of his bed.
Hes hurt hes not dying now spread out. He said to Vincent. I lightly chuckled at it and closed my eyes as Vincent left.
Well as long as youre okay then Ill be going off to sleep. Said Charlie. I looked at him and nodded. He patted me on the shoulder and got up and walked across the room. I sighed and slowly sat up. Damien sat up on his bed and leaned against the wall.
I thought I was older and was supposed to be looking after you. He said to me.
Well then next time Ill leave you to it. I looked over at Terrance who was walking towards me.
Well foxy boy, even I have to admit that I wouldnt have done anything as stupid as the stunt you pulled today. He said to me.
Umthanks I guess. I said to him, not sure whether or not to take that as a compliment. He slapped me on the back before walking off. I cringed from it, my back still being sore from the hits.
I opened my mouth to speak to Damien when the two guards walked in. I didnt look at them because I knew what they were here for. I stood up as they called for me and walked towards them. They led me out of the barracks and we started across a field towards the main human house. We on the farm were very fortunate; the owner did have some mercy in him. The two guards that now led me towards the house were new at the farm. We approached the house and I was led inside. I had only been in twice before and that was a year ago. They took me into a room where the owner was sitting. I never was able to find out his full name but we all knew him as Brian, though we all called him Sir. He had inherited the farm through his family who had a reputation of being the cruelest to the slaves that worked for him. Once he inherited the farm however he sought to change that. Not dramatic changes but he at least eased up on the treatments for the slaves. He sat in a chair in front of a table in the dining room. He ordered the two guards to leave and they did as they were instructed. He looked at me and stood up and walked over to me. I never noticed that I had taken a step away from him but he did. He rested a hand on my shoulder.
