Chapter Three
I sat up in bed after waking up. The cause however wasnt from the alarm. It would not ring for another five hours. It sounded as if the door to the barracks was opened. I looked to the entrance and realized I was right. I lay back down quickly before I was noticed for being awake. I kept an eye on the door to see what was going on. Three figures entered the room, two of them holding the third. They looked around and I could tell they were looking in my direction. I closed my eyes to pretend I was asleep. I heard their footsteps as they hit the floor coming in my direction. It sounded as though the third was being dragged across the ground.
Lets put it by the other one. I heard from one of them. I concentrated on hearing to find out where they were when I found out that they had stopped right next to my bed. I was amazed when I felt the weight shift on the bed. The two had rested the third next to me.
That outta take care of that. Said one of the two. They headed back towards the door and went out, locking it behind them. I waited until I could no longer hear them and I sat up. I looked at the new one beside me. I guessed by now that it was a new slave just recently bought. I couldnt see what it was so I lightly shook its shoulder.
Mmm. huh? What? it said to me. By the tone of the voice it was a girl. There werent many here, only two now three. I sat up strait as she also sat up, holding her head.
Are you alright? I asked her. She looked at me then looked around.
Where am I? Who are you? She asked me, sounding slightly scared.
My name is Renard, youre inside the barracks at the slave farm. I told her. She looked at me.
A slave farm? Why would I be here? She asked. I shrugged.
I dont know. Were you sold or arrested? I asked her.
What? No. I was woken up in the middle of the night by some loud banging and there was a struggle at my house and I just woke up here. She said to me. I nodded to her understandingly.
Well maybe you should get some rest. I got off of the bed and she tilted her head.
Well, isnt this your bed? she asked me.
It doesnt matter to me. I guarantee you that youll need sleep more then me. I said to her and walked to a corner of the room. I heard the bedsprings move and I knew she had lain back down. I yawned and sat down against the wall and brought my knees up to my chest. I rested my arms on the tops of my knees and my tail on my arms. I put my head down on my tail and closed my eyes, falling asleep quickly.
I woke up a little early the next morning and looked around. Everyone else was still asleep. I was about to fall back asleep when I heard somebody move. I looked back over and saw Damien slowly getting up. He sat up and yawned loudly. I was about to alert him of my presence in the corner but I was curious as to what would happen when he found out that somebody else was in my bed. I listened carefully, waiting for a reaction from him. But it never came. The girl from the night before had her face covered with her orange and white tipped tail, similar to mine. Damien merely patted her on the shoulder, thinking it was I, and he fell back to his bed and closed his eyes. I yawned and stood up slowly and looked over at my bed. No wonder he didnt realize it wasnt me. She too was a fox with very similar markings, colors, and looked to be about the same age as I. Not a perfect match but close enough. I walked over to Damiens bed on the other side of him and nudged him. He opened his eyes and turned over to face me.
