Pardon Me while I burst...

Incubus

Brixton Academy - 1/10/07

Just to clarify - this gig was supposed to happen on April 11th and, as a result, was supposed to be my birthday treat...until Mike Einziger busted his hand, and the gig was rescheduled. Ironically, after Chino Morena had a bad throat, Deftones rescheduled for April 14th, so it balanced out. Keeping up?

I was a tad late due to taking a remarkably roundabout route to Brixton, so missed the start of Puggy's set: but I can make an educated guess. Every song was remarkably similar, right down to the finishing flourish (making it impossible to tell if they were starting, finishing or in the middle of their set) and they were very Maroon 5'y. Expect to be sick of them buy January.

Amusingly, they were outdone by the PA system playing Head Like A Hole, Last Cup of Sorrow, Bulls on Parade and a warmly received Toxicity, encouraging half the crowd to sing along. In other words, the guy at the mixing desk's CD collection warmed up the crowd a lot better.

Is it really six years since I last saw Incubus? I blame having exams when they were touring Morning View, and can't remember why or how I missed them on the Crow Left tour. Little help?

So, I have to say, it was nice that they started with Just a Phase aww, they remembered! And, naturally, the fake break caught out half the crowd.

Things soon were livened up with Dig, Circles and Vitamin in short order, before taking it down a notch with Nowhere Fast in other words, this wasn't a night of pimping Light Grenades, but putting together a set guaranteed to please the crowd, leading to a mutual love-in between crowd and band. Although I must say, Brandon really is milking getting shirtless these days, removing a jacket, t-shirt and finally a vest during the set the pain of being adored by just about every girl in the universe, eh?

The other aspect of the mutually assured love-in was the amount of communal sing-alongs on offer, notably Drive and Are You In?, seeing the crowd in fine voice they also experimented a bit, with an acoustic version of Redefine. Of course, there were still plenty of chances to jump around like a demented wallaby, such as Megalomaniac, Favourite Things and Pistola, while Blood on the Ground and Beware! Criminal fall somewhere between the two camps just as set closer Nice to Know you did (and I must say I've been dying to hear that one live for, oh, six years).

The atmosphere remained chilled and appreciative with 11am opening the encore (although security repeatedly waded in because of some people lighting a spliff I say it's because they weren't sharing it around) which did ruin some of the atmosphere, but when things were rounded off with Wish You Were Here nobody could complain, and everyone left with a smile on their face even if they set was notably short, due to the band playing the entire weekend (expect me to gripe when I see all the setlists available) and there were some notable gaps in the setlist, mainly Pardon Me and A Certain Shade of Green.

So, apart from those complaints, there were no complaints. Right?

Back.
