Ice scrabblers are rodent vermin native to the ice world of Hoth. Before members of the Rebel Alliance encountered the vicious wampa ice creature, ice scrabblers were believed to be the only mammals on the frigid planet. The ice scrabbler is an arctic rodent with white or dark grey fur and drooping ears hanging on either side of their beaked, canine-like faces. The average adult ranges in length from ten to fifty centimeters, and has sharp claws used for burrowing through the ice of their frozen homeworld. Ice scrabblers make their dens deep under the icy surface, often digging as deep as 25 kilometers to the rocky crust of the planet. Ice scrabblers have a bony ridge running along their spines; a feature more pronounced with males, as portions of this ridge are raised by muscle contractions when two males compete for female attention during the mating season. Ice scrabblers have highly developed olfactory senses, and their sense of smell is so sharp they can locate the presence of their primary food source - lichen that grows in tunnels and caves deep under Hoth's surface - from a considerable distance. The scouts who first explored Hoth discovered the presence of ice scrabblers when the arctic rodents chewed their way into the landing party's food stores - despite the fact that the foodstuffs were individually wrapped and sealed in containers. The ice scrabblers merely burrowed up into these containers from under the ice. The Rebels also found problems with the ice scrabblers, and they believed that it was the concentration of these pests around Echo Base that drew the fierce wampas closer. Ice scrabblers subsist on unguarded food and cave lichen, and are in turn the prey of the native tauntauns. Rebel wranglers used ice scrabblers as bait while trying to tame wild lizard mounts during their initial set up on Hoth.
