~Second child of Richard Walmesley Blair and Ida Mabel Limonzin.

~His father was a civil servant in the opium department and his mother was the daughter of a tea-merchant in Burma.

~Member of Indian Imperial Police for 5 years

~Resigned from Indian Imperial Police in 1927
                    *His life as a policeman was a distraction from the life he really wanted, which was to be a                                  writer.
                    *He had come to feel that, as a policeman in Burma, he was supporting a political                                               system in which he could no longer believe.

~Lived life amongst the poor becaue he wanted to overcome a repulsion that he believed was typical amongst his class.

~always believed he was supposed to be a writer.
