We recently visited Cancun, Mexico (our third visit there). It is a great place to go in the winter to escape the cold weather! Treat yourself to a cup of Mayan or Mexican coffee. It is as enjoyable to drink as it is to watch it being prepared.
Cancun is a growing city and world renown tourist destination. It is located in the state of Quintana Roo on the Yucatan Peninsula. The bus system is phenomenal and will get you to wherever you want to go in the Hotel Zone or downtown Cancun for a very reasonable fee. We never waited longer than 5 minutes at any bus stop.

It is a good idea to take a day trip to the Isla Mujeres, a picturesque island only 4.5 miles long by 0.4 miles wide. The island can be reached by ferry, small boats and even by sailboat. The first time we visited Isla Mujeres we took a day tour on the Aqua II. It was great fun and it included breakfast, lunch, an open bar, snorkeling, and a shopping visit to the local town. There is a huge VanCleef & Arpel's jewelry store on the island. You can also bargain for your purchases at the local flea market. This time we caught the Nauti Shuttle from El Embarcadero over to the island and spent the day. We rented bicycles and pedaled around the island. There are also golf carts or motorbikes you can rent.
We have visited both Xcaret, a privately owned eco-archaeological park and the Mayan ruins at Chichen Itza. Both are very interesting places.
