The Union

All of my direct ancestors fought for state's rights, with the Confederacy. Some collateral ancestors fought with the Federals, most notably, a cousin, General U. S. Grant. Two lesser known collateral ancestors are shown below. Alpheus joined after his father's death. His father, Joseph, served in the Confederacy.

The Morgan family contributed soldiers to nearly every war in early America. David Morgan, known as the "great Indian Fighter", fought in Braddock's Campaign, as a British Citizen, and in the American Revolution, as an American.

Capt. David Morgan, below, was one of his great-grandsons.

Alpheus Swisher & Capt. David Morgan

Alpheus served as a priviate with the Federals in the 1st Regiment, of the West Virginia Light Artillery, in companies A and F.
(Film Number M507 roll 12)
(We know this is Alpheus and not his brother James, who died at Antietam, because of the Company designation on the kepi.)
Joseph Swisher, father to Alpheus and James, fought for the CSA, in Co. E, 11th VA Cav.
He died in the war on 18 Jan 1862.
Capt. David Morgan served in Co. B of the 10th West Virginia Infantry, for the Union.
(Film Number M507 roll 9)
