The65thSquare Middlegame Problem 001
By Kvuzon
Find a good plan for black.

What's the problem?

Here is one position from a game I thought we should try to analyze. There shouldn't be any tactics in this position so it's a positional challenge.

It's a game from an old magazine, not something I stole from a book, so I do not have any clear solution, just what annotations can be found in the magazine. You should study the following aspects about a position:

1. Centre.
2. Strong and weak squares.
3. Control over open files and diagonals.
4. Development and position of the pieces.
5. King's position and opportunities for attacks.
6. Dynamics.

1 to 5 are static and 6 is a look into the future, who can grab the initiative and so on.

Solution

1. Centre.
e4 and e5 is white d5 is black occupied and supported. The other sida cannot compete. d4 is controlled by both. I'd call this a small white advantage.

2. Strong and weak squares.
White strong squares: e4, e5. Black strong squares: d5. White weaknesses: b4, d4. Black weaknesses: d6. The pawns on c5 and b5 have the potential to be weak if white can force one of them to move when it's advantageous for white. Black cannot attack the b2 pawn so I don't believe it's weak. About equal.

3. Files and diagonals.
White controls the a file and the diagonals b1-h7 and c1-h6. Black controls the diagonals a2-g8 and d8-h4. The bishop on d5 influences actions on the a8-h1 diagonal also and if the c5 pawn moves black will get the f8-a3 diagonal. About equal.

4. Pieces.
The white Queen can move more easily than the black. The white Rooks also. The Bishops are equal. Maybe white have slightly better Knights. Small white advantage.

5. Kings.
Both well protected, neither side can easily attack the other. Equal.

Overall the white pieces have little more freedom to move. The situation is dynamic and both sides could quickly conjure up tactical complications. Pawn storms by either side is clearly unadvisable since it would open up the kings position. I'd call this an open centre. Both sides should strive to control the centre and fight for the initiative. White might find this a little easier than black but it is black to move and should choose something active.

6. Dynamics.
