New York Stock Exchange nyse 3DTF
(virtual trading floor)

project brief

The 3 Dimensional Trading Floor (3DTF), a multidimensional real-time virtual reality environment, and the
Advanced Trading Floor Operations Center, a renovation and redesign of the existing operations area within the stock
exchange are two projects given to Asymptote. In fact, it is a golden opportunity to build a physical project working with
virtual and cyber spaces which the firm have been researching on and reputed for.

concept

"The NYSE determined that the complexity of the real time information that must be contended with on
a daily basis required an innovative solution reliant on three-dimensional "visualization."

The stock exchange is a place where large amount of information and data are constantly pouring in during
the trading period. And the NYSE wants a virtual environment that could enable its staff to access, navigate
this influx of information. Therefore, the client wants an innovative solution whereby this complexity of real
time information can be accessed through visual easily.

Hence, navigating through a sea of data becomes the primarily importance of crafting the spaces. And
Asymptote strategy is to form an "information landscape", whereby the tenants are indulged in a space
surrounded with constantly changing information. In addition, this virtual terrain not only provide data to
the users but also takes into account the functional aspect of information navigation.

virtual

"All relevant information and the daily activity of trades and transactions is mapped and fully navigable,
multidimensional world."

Instead of a typical graphical display of information, stock prices, Asymptote transformed it into a fully
navigable artificial landscape that will react to all changes of stocks in real time. And the act of accessing
information begins to shape its interior spaces. For instance, the trading floor is made up of an array of nine
large, flat screen high resolution displays, that allows for constant monitoring as well as crisis management
and emcompass all aspects of the NYSE trading floor activity. In addition, the walls and ceilings are created
along the same path of presenting information.

if the power is off? and the screens are blank. what does the architecture do?

what actually constitutes an architectural experience and presence?

With the information panels and screens, the public could navigate itself through the trading floor and
accessing whatever data they need. However, imagine if the power is off, the space is reduced to a
plain "empty" and dull box and the program of the space won't work. On top of that, the architecture
is reduced to mere concrete and structure that holds up these technology products. Nevertheless, it
shows the power of technology and media as an important icon that shapes the space. In the NYSE,
information gives a space its function and character. And because of the virtual and ever-changing
character in the media screen, it gives a new dimension and sensory experience to an ordinary real
space. (physical space)

design translation: from a digital, virtual space to a real space

The step of translating from a virtual to a real space is limited. This is due to its extreme differences in character. A virtual
space has no site, no ground, no gravity and it is a kind of space which the imagination shapes. However, once that
is transferred to the real world, the physical conditions do not allow such premise to happen. Hence, architecture
relies heavily on the digital screen to communicate the idea of virtual reality. On the other hand, it is what the new
age architecture is about, revolving around technology to give its innovative edge.
