H2O Injection Page

After years of research I have made the Jump to Water Injection. I have been reading about it and Alchohol injection for years. Having seen articles on Buick Grand Nationals that had Alchohol systems, I kept it in the back of my mind on a list of outrageous things to try on my car. But the more I thought about it, the more appealing it was. I bought a Spearco Unit back in 1999, but never put the thing in, because after seeing the pump(a windshield washer pump) that came with it, I was scared to try it. I had heard stories about the Spearco kits leaking and the kit siphoning water into the engine while the engine was not running, and then hydrolocking the engine upon start up. I knew that a kit like the Aquamist with solenoids to prevent water from siphoning was much more advanced than the Spearco, but I wasn't willing to pay the high price of the Aquamist pump. I realized that spending an extra $200 or so would allow me to run high boost without race gas. So saving money on racegas to run high boost, would pay for the Water injection kit. I joined the DSM_water_injection list, and stumbled onto Mark Philip's website, and then stumbled onto a few more, and both he and Brad at Georges Imports were my main source of info on my current setup. I run windshield washer fluid, because most windshield washer fluid is Distilled water, alchohol(methanol) and 2 percent blue die. So I gues I could say I run water/alchohol injection.

I installed a single nozzle kit in the Galant for starters, and I was amazed! A dual nozzle kit will be installed in the Talon at some point.

Here are some initial Dataloggs: These are both at about 6400rpms in 3rd gear:

Without water:

Knock Sum of 20

Timing = 13 degrees

WITH Water Injection:

Knock Sum of 1

Timing = 21 degrees

The ECU was able to advance timing 8 degrees!!!!

The car felt more responsive on the Top end, where it used to feel like it was running out of steam, No Pun Intended. :-)

So here's a list of the current Setup:

The Truck overflow tank was slightly larger than the car one, so I got that one. I think its about 3/4 of a gallon. So far in three days and about 100 miles of spirited driving, it is still half full, and the water starts injecting at about 5psi. But obviously it wasn't injecting boost all of those 100 miles.

I also found a 2 1/2 Gallon white water jug. Looks like a Red Gas Jug you would buy at any autoparts store, except its white(basically see through).

Hardware from Georges Imports:

So for around $200, I have no need for Race Gas, which is $7.25 a gallon these days.

I have been informed that the Taps are available from McMasterCar for Under $10. They are an odd size thread pitch, so you won't be finding them at Sears, Home Depot, or Lowes.

One of the Grand National Guys I know Brian Lee who has a similar setup to mine told me about the cheaper taps.

Here are some pics of some parts, solenoids and pressure switches.

Stay Tuned I'll be posting more info and pictures when I get the kit in the Talon. The Talon will be using cheaper solenoids, but will have two jets instead of one. The pressure switch on the Galant is from the Spearco kit that I never used. The pressure switches that I have for the Talon are Hobbs Switches from NAPA, two of them are pre set for a specific pressure, and the third I have is adjustable. Stay tuned for the Talon setup because that car has Intake temp sensors to monitor intake charge temps before and after the intercooler.
