 Workcamp

Venue: Trans Mara-Kuria and Maasai communities

Duration: 10 days

Dates: 16th –26th August 2005

Participants: The work camp is proposed to have not more than 30 participants each that would have participated in the training for trainers moderated by Nairobi Peace Initiative-Africa and include volunteers from world student Christian Federation, Africa regional office, Kenya Voluntary Development Association (KVDA) and representatives of workcamp organizations within the great lakes region in collaboration with partners worldwide.

Implementation: This will be done by Kenya Voluntary Development Association in collaboration with members of the local communities

Aims/Objectives:

1.      To translate the training themes in practice on peace building, conflict resolution and reconstruction.

Activities at work camp/strategy-

KVDA proposes to divide the 60 participants into two workcamps one in Kuria and another among the Maasai communities along the common border. This will ensure that we have a forum for the participants to address challenges that hinder cooperation between the two communities:

1.      Work on manual project initiated by the local community as the bridge of community trust and communication. This will be done for a maximum of six hours per day. This will be construction of primary schools in the two camps.

2.      Visit families for inter-cultural exchange on challenges of development.

3.      Face-face meetings with community members from the two tribes to establish sources of conflicts and mentoring into the reconciliation process.

4.      Implementation of training plan of action and recommendations on conflict resolution

5.      Inter-cultural and cross-cultural exchange among the ethnic communities-2 groups at different venues Maasai and Kuria communities-Evening joint meetings-mid term evaluation-community participation.

6.      Moving beyond cultural barriers to introduce the concept of a workcamp at the community level in order for them to understand the importance of volunteering that is an effective tool for transformation of society. Impact of workcamp in a conflict and post conflict situation

The voluntary service movement is a global platform for solidarity and peace work and focused to attain social justice as well as an environment for human harmony friendship and dialogue.

Majority of volunteering organizations that are membership, have a larger constituency and making it viable for replication of training modules in respective countries represented at the training and workcamp.

Follow up of the mega training through the global voluntary service network-CCIVS- would further enhance common actions as the CCIVS 2004 general assembly resolved peace building, conflict resolution and reconstruction as high priority areas and designated specific organizations to follow-up these actions. Kenya Voluntary Development Association (KVDA) was designated to follow up further actions within the CCIVS fraternity on peace work and the Nairobi peace Initiative-Africa and World student Christian Federation-Africa regional office partnership would empower this process to encompass larger spectrum.
