Free training in UNIX and Linux

Free accounts on UNIX

This is good for folks totally new to UNIX and also for those who have not been able to get hold of an old PC/laptop.

FEEL FREE TO PLAY AROUND, please do not get disheartened. Please DO NOT hesitate to contact me if you have any issues whatsoever. My contact details: [email protected] 773 318 0068

YOU MAY USE THE FREE ROOT ACCOUNT ON ONE OF MY SYSTEMS.

SO EXACTLY HOW DO I CONNECT?
YOU WILL, AS USER 'unix' TELNET TO ONE SYSTEM, THN, FROM THERE, AS "root" you will telnet to any of three other systems. The system you will telnet to first is: trainingzone.getmyip.com once there, you may telnet to any of these systems: ASHWATHAMA, and, GANDHARI their IP address respectively being: 192.168.0.128, and, 192.168.0.179.
So, you could type(when using hostnames):

telnet ASHWATHAMA

AND/OR

telnet GANDHARI

HERE IS HOW:

You may, on the dos prompt, type: telnet trainingzone.getmyip.com (the spaces between, the word, "telnet", and, "trainingzone.getmyip.com", are not unimportant)

or
Use a "telnet client", a software that will, perhaps, make it a lot earier to connect(automates the connection part, you may save settings, etc)
Putty, is a "telnet client"
Download and install putty,

A good program to use for telnet is called putty and putty is available at: http://www.tucows.com/preview/195286

putty is, among other things, "a telnet client". In putty, you may "store" your session connection stuff.... ensure "telnet" is checked, DO NOT replace the 23 by 2033, put in the HOSTNAME(HERE IT IS:- trainingzone.getmyip.com)...give it a name(SAVE THE SESSION USING A NAME, LIKE, MY SESSION, ETC)...save click "open", "load" is different from "open"....ENSURE that the correct data is in your saved session: trainingzone.getmyip.com

username: unix
(it is in lower case)
password:
(Just hit enter, as in, (hit the enter key))

THERE ARE THREE SYSTEMS YOU MAY NOW TELNET TO, AFTER YOU LOGIN, TYPE: telnet ASHWATHAMA (or, telnet GANDHARI)

then at the login type: root
For password: hit enter(hit the enter key)

NOW YOU ARE ROOT!

You may use the links below as a guide for learning UNIX.

If you have a "beginning UNIX" book, (they are available at public libraries) feel free to follow it, and use the account for practical work.

http://www.mathematik.uni-kl.de/~support/Basic_UNIX_Tutorial.pdf
http://www.he.net/info/unix.tutorial/
http://www.mcsr.olemiss.edu/unixhelp/
http://staff.washington.edu/rells/R110/
http://support.uchicago.edu/docs/misc/unix/app/vi.html
http://www.math.utah.edu/lab/unix/unix-commands.html
More (better?) tutorials are here.

To login to the system, from your windows system:

start---->run--->type in cmd

You can now learn basic UNIX commands etc.

You should cover everything in the links mentioned before. UNIX may appear less intuitive, it may appear to be greek/latin to start with, however with practice and patience, you will become more proficient.

Please let me know if there is a link that does is not valid.

I CARE ABOUT YOUR COMPLETING THE COURSE NOT THE NUMBER OF TIMES YOU HIT ctrl-c

All of the above will be great to get started on some hands on work, remember IF YOU WANT HELP ON ANY UNIX COMMAND TYPE: man "command name"

For instance, if you want to know what the UNIX command "cat" does, type man cat

The idea is that you may, in addition to other methods, use the free accounts and learn UNIX. I tested these links, these folks, too, offer free shell accounts(THEY PROBABLY, DO NOT OFFER ROOT ACCESS, I DO):

http://www.celebris.net/?p=sign-up

http://nullshells.net/services.html#freeshell

http://www.new-order.org/freeshell/

I will help
Kartik
