CERN, the European centre for research in particle physics.CERN has done major pioneering researches in the field of elementary particles since its inception. It has also brought out many new technologies. For example, the World Wide Web has been evolved a result of the HTTP and the HTML that were created at CERN. CERN is a collecitve endeavor of many countries and is probably the world's biggest laboratory. Some amazing facts about CERN: *Antimatter is routinely produced at CERN (more than 10 million particles per second). *The world's largest magnet, weighing more than the Eiffel tower, is at CERN. *The vacuum in the Laboratory's accelerators is the best between CERN and the moon. *CERN's detectors are the size of four-storey houses. *CERN's biggest accelerator is 27 kilometres around, and particles travelling near the speed of light lap it over 11000 times each second. * Over 1800 physicists work on the biggest experiment being prepared for CERN's next accelerator. This experiment will generate data at a rate about equal to everyone on Earth simultaneously making 10 telephone calls each. |

TIFR has been established by the great Indian scientist Dr. Homi Jehangir Bhabha. An important physics phenomenon called "Bhabha Scattering" was named after him. He was the father of India's nuclear program. He has also established BARC (Bhabha atomic research centre) at Bombay. He envisaged that future Indian power needs can be met only by nuclear power. |
| Bell Laboratories
A premier lab which has done inumerable innovations in many fields. The popular computer language C was created at Bell labs. Its present president is Dr. Arun Netravali, an Indian and alumnus of IIT Bombay, a premier Indian university for science and technology. |
