You there! Boy! What are you doing back there?

Excuse me, sir. From the back, in the dark, you looked like one of those teenaged hoodlums, and I thought you were up to some mischief.

Now that you mention it, it isn't my business. In fact, I'm only in town for this evening. But I suppose my sensibilities were offended. Still, if all you were doing was rummaging for something useful, no harm, no foul, as they say.

Since you ask, no, I'm not entirely human. Enough otherwise to be unappetizing to you, Mr. Vampire.

Yes, well, out here under the streetlights it's much more obvious. But please, I dislike this sort of rudeness. Please, allow me to introduce myself like a civilized gentleman. I am called Sirius. Philo Alberton Sirius, to be exact. And you are?

A pleasure to meet you then, Mr. Spike. Perhaps you could help me. I am looking for a particular  address. I have it written here, just one moment. Yes, here we are. 1031 Lillywhite. Might you perhaps direct me?

What's there? The House of Midnight, a sort of supper club, but just for tonight. It moves around, rather.

You, I shouldn't think you'd be surprised. Have you lived on the Hellmouth long?

I would imagine 'too long' is a matter of perspective. I say, why don't you accompany me. As a member, I'm welcome to bring guests, and I've found vampires to be entertaining company, provided they're reasonable well-spoken, of course, as you seem to be, sir.

Not even out of curiosity? Come now, allow me to twist your arm. No? More dumpsters to dig through?

Ha! I knew I could convince you. Lead on, then, sir.

+++++++++++++

Yes, it is a lovely house. Wonderful craftsmanship. You don't see that much these days. Masonry's a dying art, more's the pity. Good evening! It's so lovely to see your beautiful face again, Madame Traveste. May I introduce my guest this evening, Mr. Spike, a resident of these parts. Yes, vampire, or course. You can't toss a pebble in this town without hitting a few, I've noticed, but Mr. Spike here seems above the usual fanged rabble.

You see, Ma'am, a perfect gentleman. Mr. Spike, excuse my gauche-ness, but in what year were you made into a vampire?

Well, in your honor, perhaps Madame Traveste can see fit to escort us to The Victoria Room. I think you'll find it to your liking.

+++++++++++++

Yes, it is very posh, but I wouldn't let La Traveste overhear you referring to her establishment in such vulgar terms. As I told you, it's a supper club, no more, and the young ladies serving us are just that- ladies.

Please sit down, Mr. Spike, you're making me uneasy with your restlessness.

Of course that's you. Don't you recognize your own reflection?

Oh. Quite. Well, it's not an ordinary mirror, I'd wager. Or perhaps it's an effect of the distortion that surrounds this house.

No, no, of course not. It's all perfectly safe. Now do sit down, our servants are ready for our order.

Good evening, my dears. I am ready to order. I'll begin with Endive Canaps, followed by Marseilles Bouillabaisse, Potatoes with Truffles and Caviar, a nice rare Sirloin, and for dessert, the Raspberry-Chocolate Mousse.

To drink? I leave that to the chef's discretion. Mr. Spike, what would you have this evening? Don't be shy, you are my guest, and with all that implies.

Just whiskey, then? Very well, a bottle of your finest for Mr. Spike, Poppy.

Yes, very pretty girls. Poppy and Foxglove, there, have been the servants for this room as long as I've been coming here, which is quite a long time, let me assure you, and they are always as fresh as the dew. But it's the same for the serving girls in the other rooms.

Oh, dozens, I should think, each with its own theme. The Nefertiti Room, with its Egyptian motif, is one of my favorites. The Aphrodite, done up like a Greek temple, and The Marie Antoinette, full of decadent splendor. And the Hindi Room, with its dark-eyed maids, always in high demand.

You know, I don't subsist on blood, as your kind do, but I have been known to partake from time to time, and I can recommend the girls most highly if you'd like a drop or two. Foxglove, in particular, she'll buzz in your veins like a dragonfly, all round your brain, singing and vibrating, while Poppy, she's more subtle on the palate, a shower of feathers.

Why, thank you, sir, I'll take that as a compliment. I'm sure your lady friend is quite the conversationalist. But the girls? What say you?

Really? How interesting?

Please, please, I meant no offense, but I've never heard of such a thing. However did you come by it?

Yes, such is the way of governments, it's true. Ultimately they think they know how best to run the private citizens affairs... But still, I'd wager the ladies here would be quite outside the... chip, did you say? Yes, the
chip's purview.

Still, it's worth a try, wouldn't you say, old chap?

Well done, then. Poppy! Come here, my dear. Sit here with us. That's right, just between us, here. You see, my companion here, is one of the children of darkness. Yes, it's true. You wouldn't mind if he... ah...

Yes, that's right, unbutton that high, stiff collar, my girl. Ah, I'm tempted for a taste myself, but you first, sir.

Ah, yes, gently, gently... You see, I told you so. Easy, now. Yes, that should be enough.

Mmmm, potent, is it not. Thank you, Poppy, darling. Let me help you up, my dear. I think you've quite gone to Mr. Spike's head.

Are you all right there, sir? Yes, it's just as I said, rather intoxicating.
You just lie down here on the cushions. I don't mind. Close your eyes, if you like. Ah, here's my canaps...

+++++++++++++

Spike, where have you been? We haven't seen you for days!

Last night? A week ago, maybe.

... The fourteenth... Where were you?

Lillywhite Street? There's no supper club there.

Of course I'm sure. How long have I lived here?

Are you alright? You look a little... I don't know... spooked.

Fine, be all anti-social. It's not like I really cared where you were, anyway!
