Summer Crossover Series 2003:
Rose-Tint My World

A Buffy/Trading Spaces (Saturdays on The Learning Channel) Crossover

Introduction to the Series: Well, Buffy has at last come to an end, and while I will most likely continue to write Angel fanfic, it has been suggested that I expand my options. In that interest, my fanfic series this summer will give me an opportunity to explore other fandoms through a series of crossovers with Buffy and Angel characters. Some will be less serious than others...

Introduction to "Rose-Tint My World": When Faith and Robin Wood were last seen, they were taking the first steps in a relationship. When Willow and Kennedy were last seen, they were hot and heavy into some Sapphic lovin. In my little fanfic world (fueled by a little too much caffeine, possibly), Robins mature outlook and caring nature has gotten past Faiths barriers, putting her in a more safe and healthy place emotionally. Theyre also engaged. Willow and Kennedy, having survived the latest apocalypse, are also working on a more adult relationship and have moved in together. In wacky sitcom fashion, these two couples live next door to one another, in two-bedroom, one-and-a-half bath, suburban townhouses. If you dont know Trading Spaces, it is explained in the fic. You can see pictures of Paige Davis (the host), Frank Bielec and Laurie Hickson-Smith (designers), and Amy-Wynn Pastor (carpenter and handy-person)
here and check out some before-and-after photos here.

Paige Davis: Welcome to Trading Spaces. I'm Paige Davis. This is the show where two sets of homeowners spend the night in each other's houses and make-over one of the rooms with the help of our designers. Our first pair of homeowners is engaged couple Faith and Robin.

[Faith and Robin are playing Frisbee in the front yard of a non-descript townhouse.]

Paige: They're trading spaces with Faith's friend Willow and her roommate, Kennedy.

[Willow and Kennedy join Frisbee game.]

Paige: They'll have 48 hours and 1000 dollars to redo the others' room.

[Scene switches to Frank, Laurie, and Amy-Wynn at the beach. Frank is buried to his neck in sand and Laurie and Amy-Wynn are piling more on.]

Paige: [voice-over] Assisting them will be designers Frank Bielec and Laurie Hickson-Smith, and handy-person Amy-Wynn Pastor. Will they help turn their town-house hideaways into the palace of their dreams?

[Paige stands on the sidewalk of a townhouse complex, Faith and Robin on one side, Willow and Kennedy on the other. Paige is holding a keyring in each hand and smiling. The other four look excited and nervous.]

Paige: Now, remember, none of you can know whats going on in your own home while youre spending the night in your friends home. Everybody ready?

[Robin, Faith, Willow and Kennedy all nod. Paige crosses her arms and hands over the keys.]

Paige: Then trade spaces!

[Faith grabs Willows keys, Kennedy grabs Faiths, they all cross in Front of Paige running to one anothers houses.]

[Faith and Robin run up on the front porch of Willow and Kennedys house. Its painted a colonial blue with white trim. There are potted flowers and a couple of wind-chimes. They open the door.
Cut to: Frank in Willow and Kennedys Living room/Dining room measuring the windows. Faith and robin enter.]

Frank: Hi there! Come over here to the sofa.

[They all sit down. Camera begins to pan around the room. There is an overstuffed sofa and two mismatched armchairs draped with tie-dyed tapestries. Two bookshelves piled with books and jars and boxes are against the wall. The walls are white, the wall-to-wall carpeting is powder blue.]

Frank: Now, what can you tell me about your friends Willow and Kennedy?

Faith: Well, theyre dykes.

[Robin stifles a laugh and Frank blanches.]

Frank: (faintly) I mean, what are they looking for in a room?

Faith: (Clearly having seen the show a few times) Color. They definitely need some color in this room.

Robin: And storage. I know Willow wants to get things organized.

Frank: Im also getting the sense that your friends like a romantic environment. Lots of soft textures, drapy fabrics, cozy little nooks where they can relax, with a cup of tea, perhaps.

Faith: Yeah, theyd love something like that.

Frank: (standing) Then lets clear the room and get started.

[Fast-forward effect of room being cleared while goofy music plays. A careful frame-by-frame with Tivo reveals Faith removing sofa, chairs, filled credenza, TV and stand, lamps and coffee table while Frank and Robin remove items from bookshelves into boxes. When room is clear, Robin tangoes Faith around in a circle while Frank prances a bit.]

[Cut to: Willow and Kennedy running onto Faith and Robins porch. The house is white with forest green trim; there is a dead potted palm in the corner. They open the door, giggling.
Cut to: Laurie, in Faith and Robins bedroom. She is holding up paint samples and squinting. Willow and Kennedy enter.]

Laurie: Hi! Its so great to meet you.

[Laurie leads them all to the bed. They sit down. Willow is giving Laurie a funny look; she reminds her of someone. Camera pans around the room. Its a Spartan affair: Mattress and box spring on metal casters, a few shelves, nightstands. But--- it has hardwood floors! (With a Mexican throw rug.) The walls are, you guessed it, white. Okay, *eggshell.* (Theyre white.)]

Laurie: (waving her hands) This room needs *he-e-e-lp.* It needs everything. We need color, texture, storage

Kennedy: Furniture.

Willow: (under her breath) Soundproofing

Laurie: Im feeling that your friends lead hectic lives. They dont have the time or the energy after a busy day to create a calming space to just relax, unwind

[Willow rolls her eyes, Kennedy smirks.]

Laurie: (standing and picking up some pillows) Lets clear the room.

[Fast-forward room clear. A frame-by-frame reveals Willow opening the drawer of one of the night stands, blushing, and slamming it closed. Laurie does a lot mor dancing and clowning than actual moving. All three collapse dramatically to the floor.]

[Cut to: Frank, Faith and Robin kneeling around a couple of paint cans. Frank starts to open one.]

Frank: Well be working on the floor treatment later, but well leave this carpeting down while we paint the walls. [Frank opens the can to reveal a medium-dark blue with gray undertones. Faith and Robin approve. Frank opens two smaller cans. One an iron-gray, the other a light silver. Frank explains they are for the trim and furniture, with ceiling in the silver. They break out the rollers and start painting.]

[Cut to: Bedroom. Drop cloths have been spread out and Laurie is revealing the paint. The walls will be an auburn brown, with brick red and honey gold trim and furniture. Laurie explains they will also be using a lot of black in the fabrics in the room, and metallic copper trim.]

[Cut to: Robin and Faith painting. Robin (being taller) is running the roller and Faith is on the dry side of the room painting the window trim. Frank enters carrying an armload of blue fabric. He unfolds some. Its a slightly darker blue than the walls with an all-over pattern of pale yellow stars.]

Frank: I wanted to show the fabric Im going to use to slipcover the sofa, and this (he pulls out fabric with broad gray and silver stripes) is for the armchairs. Then, were going to make a few throw pillows. [He displays a few smaller pieces of complimentary fabric.] Now, whos on sewing machine duty?

[Faith and Robin look at each other, smile, and play a quick game of Rock, Paper, Scissors. Faith wins (with rock) and punches Robin very lightly on the arm. They both laugh.]

[Cut to: Laurie with Amy-Wynn at the Trading Spaces truck. She pulls out a sketch.]

Laurie: Faith and Robin have almost no storage in their bedroom. Willow told me they keep a lot of their clothes in boxes in their closet, so I wanted to make them a nice, big storage unit. (She indicates the sketch.) I want this to be about four feet wide, seven feet tall, and eighteen inches deep, with doors like a wardrobe, but with lots of nice little cube-shaped spaces and shelves for their clothes. Ill also need three boxes to mount on the walls as display/shelving units.

Amy-Wynn: I can do that.

Laurie: But first, I want a tall headboard that I can upholster and mount to the wall above their bed. They have a queen size, so it will be 60 inches wide and about 40 inches from the bed to the top. Can you have that done by this afternoon?

Amy-Wynn: No problem. I havent heard from Frank yet, so Ill start this right away.

[Cut to: Another room of Willows house, where a sewing machine has been set up. Frank is sewing the slipcovers while Robin stuffs some pillows.]

Frank: So what do you think is going on in your house while youre over here?

Robin: I really have no idea. But that room was so empty almost anything would be an improvement.

Frank: Are you worried about Laurie as a designer?

Robin: No, shes pretty level-headed. I dont think shed do anything too crazy.

[Cut to: Laurie and Willow with the headboard on the floor of the bedroom. Underneath the board is foam padding cut to match, and a piece of some kind of material about six inches bigger on all sides. The painting in the room has been completed.]

Laurie: Were going to upholster this headboard now. Judging from the rest of the house, I know Robin and Faith like a kind of masculine look. Lots of metal and dark colors. I noticed they have a medieval weapon collection, so Im going to bring that into this room, and showcase some of the pieces in shadow boxes. But to complement that, were going to give them a headboard upholstered with black leather.

[She folds the fabric over. Its a soft black matte.]

Laurie: This isnt real leather, of course. Not with a 1000 dollar budget. But it is a nice, sturdy pleather. And were going to finish it off with silver upholstery tacks around the edges and some silver star-shaped studs.

Kennedy: Theyre going to love this.

Laurie: (demonstrating) Now, Kennedy, you fold over the pleather and hold it down while I show Willow how to use the staple gun.

[They do. Laurie continues her demonstration of proper upholstering.]

[Cut to: Frank showing sketches to Amy-Wynn.]

Frank: The one big piece of furniture I need for this room is an entertainment center with shelves for their books. I have a fun old-fashioned pharmacists cabinet for all their little trinkets and things, so between the two pieces I think theyll have plenty of storage. I also got a few floating wall shelves. Can you do it?

Amy-Wynn: For you, Frank? Anything.

Frank: (giving Amy-Wynn a little side-hug.) Youre the best, girl.

[Cut to: Faith and Robins back yard. The complete but unfinished wardrobe-type unit and three shadow boxes are on the grass.]

Laurie: Im really proud of you. Weve gotten a lot accomplished today. But now its time to assign homework. I need you to prime and paint this storage unit the honey color with brick doors, and the shadow boxes honey around the outside and the inside sides, and paint the bottom, what will be the back when its hanging on the wall, brick. Okay?

Willow and Kennedy: Okay.

Laurie: And try to get some sleep. Tomorrow we need to finish the headboard, copper-leaf these furniture pieces, and we still need to work on the window treatments. See you bright and early in the morning.

[Cut to: Frank with Faith and Robin in the living room. The painting is complete, and the carpet has been pulled up to reveal plywood planking.]

Frank: Okay, heres your homework assignment. (He opens a large cardboard carton and pulls out a sand-colored tile.) I want you to install these cork flooring tiles. Were way ahead of schedule, and this room isnt too large, so I dont think youll have any problem. See you tomorrow.

[Day 2 animation.]

What happens when the cameras go off

[In Faith and Robins house, Willow and Kennedy are curled up on the bed, now in the middle of the dining room.]

Kennedy: I thought wed never finish. I think the paint fumes were causing me to hallucinate.

Willow: (eyes closed) The crew comes back at seven tomorrow, so, wow, a whole three hours sleep for us.

Kennedy: Im proud of you, baby. This room is gonna look incredible. Faith is gonna freak out completely. (She kisses Willow on the cheek.) What do you think theyre doing at our place?

[Willows eyes snap open in alarm.]

Willow: Of god, I havent had time to think about it. Faiths probably convinced Frank and Robin to paint the whole room fluorescent orange, or Pepto-Bismol pink.

Kennedy: (teasing) Maybe theyre doing something really experimental, like super-gluing tree bark to the walls.

Willow: (turning to Kennedy) How did I ever let you and Robin talk me into this?

Kennedy: (kissing Willows nose) Easy, babe. Faiths calmed down a lot since she and Robin started shacking up. You heard her when we found out we were on. Shes looking forward to having the bitchingest bedroom in town. And I know she wants to do the same for us.

Willow: (turning back and closing her eyes) Youre right. And Frank is pretty cool. A little country-fied, but nothing a little re-arranging wont fix.

Kennedy: (closing her eyes and snuggling against Willow) Thats right. Itll be cool. And even if its not, we can pretend it is.

Kennedy: (after a moment) That Amy-Wynn was totally checking you out, though.

Willow: (amused) She was not.

Kennedy: Totally.

[In Willow and Kennedy's house, Faith and Robin are in the girls' bedroom, similarly snuggled.]

Robin: Thanks for going along with this, sweetheart.

Faith: Nah. I'm actually having fun. It's weird how owning a house makes you worry about these things. I'm actually concerned about painting and stuff.

Robin: I think the room looks great.

Faith: Me, too. I mean, it's so Willow, all earth-mother-moon-goddess-Wicca bullcrap.

Robin: (laughing) What do you think they're doing at our place?

Faith: I don't care.

Robin: Really?

Faith: Please. It was a big white box with nothing in it. Unless they set the place on fire, it has to be an improvement.

Robin: (laughs again) True.

Faith: (sleepily) I know they're working like crazy, though. That Laurie goes crazy with the homework assignments.

Robin: (mock accusingly) You told me you never paid attention to the show.

Faith: Well, after we got picked I did. Know your enemy, you know?

[They snuggle closer together.]

Robin: Goodnight, sweetheart.

Faith: You, too, baby.

[Cut to: Willow and Kennedy sitting on Faith's back porch drinking tea. Laurie walks up with two large shopping bags.]

Laurie: I saw the painting you did. It looks great! Are you ready to get started?

[Willow and Kennedy nod.]

Laurie: Then get caffeinated and meet me inside.

[Cut to: Faith and Robin drinking coffee in the middle of Willow's living room. The cork flooring has been installed (and looks great). Frank enters.]

Frank: Good morning, junior campers. This floor looks fantastic.

Robin and Faith: Thanks.

Frank: I just spoke to Amy-Wynn, and she's finished the entertainment unit, so why don't you finish your breakfast and meet me out back.

[More finishing up: Laurie shows Willow how to apply the copper leaf to the doors of the storage unit and the back of the shadow-boxes. Robin and Frank carry in the completed entertainment center, and hang gauzy curtains. Laurie installs Venetian blinds. Kennedy uses upholstery tacks and studs to finish the headboard, and they install it, then hang the shadow boxes.]

[Paige-Cam: Robin fitting slipcovers onto furniture.]

Paige: (behind camera) How's it going?

Robin: Very well, all things considered.

Paige: Have you ever done any sewing before?

Robin: No, but I think I'm having beginner's luck. And Frank is an excellent teacher.

Paige: Are you concerned about what's going on at your place?

Robin: (grins) More like curious, I think. I'm looking forward to the reveal.

[Cut to: Faith's bedroom. Laurie and Kennedy are installing mini spotlights on the shadowboxes, which are now hanging on the wall. The headboard has been installed and the wardrobe is in place. Laurie turns on the light, illuminating a crossbow mounted inside the box, silhouetted against the shiny copper.]

Laurie: And voila! Now, lets get this room loaded up.

[Cut to: Frank, on a stepladder, free-hand painting a celestial patterned border in pale yellow along the top of the wall. Robin and Faith are installing iron-gray floating shelves on the wall.]

Frank: I think this just about does it. What do you think?

Robin: Great. Really pulls the room together.

Faith: Willow's gonna love it.

[Cut to: Paige standing out front.]

Paige: Time's up!

[Camera slowly pans around Willow and Kennedy's living room, doing the before-and-after cross-fade. The walls are blue with iron-gray trim and silvery-gauzy curtains that hang all the way to the floor, and are swept back in a graceful arc to a gold tie-back with stars and glass beads. The sand-colored cork floor has a few abstract-patterned blue and gray long-pile throw rugs. The re-upholstered chairs and sofa have been turned 90 degrees to form a grouping that allows for better traffic flow in the room. There is also an iron-gray coffee table. The TV unit and all the bookshelves are painted silver-gray with iron-gray backs, and the clutter has been organized. To the side is a multi-drawered pharmacists cabinet, and there are three iron-gray floating shelves on the wall. Ivory pillar candles stand on the coffee table and shelves.]

Paige: (voice-over) Will Franks heavenly living room put stars in our home-owners eyes?

[Cut to Paige and Frank sitting on the sofa.]

Paige: Youve done a really tranquil and relaxing room for them.

Frank: And yet, theres still a sense of whimsy that I think theyll appreciate.

Paige: But you did go *slightly* over budget. Two dollars and forty-two cents.

Frank: (handing over the money) I knew I should have gone for the shorter pillar candles.

[Fast-forward effect of Robin, Faith, and Frank transforming the room.]

[Cut to: Paige leading in Willow and Kennedy holding their hands over their eyes.]

Paige: Okay. See your new room.

[Willow and Kennedy open their eyes. Theyre stunned.]

Willow: (looking around the room) Oh, Goddess! Oh Oh

Kennedy: Willow, look at that cabinet.

Willow: Is this our furniture?

Paige: They slip-covered it.

Kennedy: I cant believe this is our house.

Willow: (tears in her eyes) I love it. Its so beautiful. I cant believe Faith worked so hard.

[She and Kennedy hug.]

[Cut to: Camera slowly pans around Faith and Robins bedroom, doing the before-and-after cross-fade. The walls are auburn with sparing use of brick-red trim. The black leather, silver-studded headboard (which stands over six feet tall) dominates the room. The bed itself is covered with a black velvet coverlet, and has several coordinating pillows. The storage unit, nightstands, and shelves are honey gold with copper-leaf doors. The windows have black Venetian blinds. Opposite the bed are the shadow boxes with individual mini-spots illuminating the weapons within. There is a small vase with white rosebuds on each nightstand. The effect is one of a dungeon done by IKEA.]

Paige: (voice-over) Will Lauries masculine autumn-colored bedroom mean sweet dreams for our homeowners?

[Cut to Paige and Laurie on the bed.]

Paige: This room is really *bold.* Do you think its too bold for a bedroom?

Laurie: For the average person, maybe. But everything in this house is so strong and minimalist, I knew a frilly, feminine bedroom will be out of place.

Paige: And youre three dollars and eight cents under budget.

Laurie: Im surprised. The pleather and velvet set me back. But this space really needed them to balance the hard edges of the furniture.

[Fast-forward effect of Willow, Kennedy, and Laurie transforming the room.]

[Cut to: Paige leading in Faith and Robin. Robin is holding his hands over Faiths eyes.]

Paige: Open your eyes and see your new bedroom.

[Faith and Robin look at the room. Shock quickly turns to joy.]

Robin: Wow. I mean Wow.

Faith: This room kicks a--. (bleeped for the family audience.)

Robin: This is absolutely amazing.

Faith: That bed. And the cabinet!

Robin: (pointing) Look at the weapons display.

[Willow and Kennedy enter.]

Kennedy: What do you think?

Faith: (grabbing Kennedy, then Willow, in a hug) You guys totally rock. This is massive. Really epic.

Robin: (hugging the others, too) Thank you both so much.

Willow: And thanks for our room, too. Its beautiful.

Paige: (facing the camera) Thats all for Trading Spaces. Thanks to Frank, Laurie, and Amy-Wynn. Well see you next time!
