| Summer Vacation Series: Annotations By Kuzibah |
| Annotations: Spike: Acquiring Minds Want to Know - Hisano originally appeared in my story Occupational Hazards. His physical appearance is based on Leslie Cheung in Bride with the White Hair. - Spikes conversation with the second guard, Isamu, about job satisfaction, is intentionally reminiscent of Ford Prefects conversation with the Vogon guard in The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. Tara: Miss Kitty Fantastico Finds Love - No notes Cordelia: Greetings from Terminal Island, California - Terminal Island is a federal prison. Thanks to wwolfe for telling me this is where Cordys parents would have ended up. - This story is also the first mention of the feast season of the Saint of Torturers. This is a device I used to give everyone a vacation. Incidentally, the Saint of Torturers is me its one of my Dark Side honorifics. - Natures Spirit Body Shop is a health food and organic cosmetics shop in Havre de Grace, Maryland. My former sister-in-law used to send me birthday presents from there. - Ben and Jerrys Heath Bar Crunch is my favorite ice cream. - The neighbor practicing his guitar is wwolfe, who we learned lives in Cordelias building in my story, Touch the Ground. Oz: Boy on a String - The title is from a song by David Mead. - Thanks to wwolfe again for the gift of a book that supplied a good deal of information about day-to-day life in a circus. - Enid is named for a Barenaked Ladies song. - Bema says shoosh. Little SO to Xanders Woman. Riley: They Do the Walk, The Walk of Life - The title is from a song by Dire Straits - W.P. Kinsella wrote Shoeless Joe, upon which the movie Field of Dreams is based. The comment about marrying outside the faith is from a Kinsella story, as well. A Mystery Guest: Part of the Solution - A story-long SO to my friend Enigma (aka Enigam) for her birthday. In Buffys world, this might be what she went into. - Phalanx in an ancient Roman military formation that was pretty much unstoppable at the time, allowing Rome to conquer much of the known world. Wesley: Seven Day Cruise - A cruise, in this context, is a road trip, not unlike wwolfe took a few weeks ago. - Besides Tim Powerss Last Call, this story has influences from Piers Anthonys Tarot series and the song Cat-Eye Willie Claims His Lover by Dave Carter. Giles: Open Mike Night - The comment about bleached-blondes and red convertibles is from an old Firesign Theatre routine. - The term Javanistas may be common now (I dont know), but I first heard it at the Godfrey Daniels coffeehouse on 4th St. (positively 4th St.) in Bethlehem, PA. Ellen, Marsh, and Otto are all regs there, and the incident with the guitar amp actually happened (although it wasnt really Otto who did it). They also do the thing with the Scrabble tiles. Angel, Spike, Gunn: The Hunting of the Snark - The title is from a poem by Lewis Carroll, but actually refers to all of Spikes snarky comments (as they say over at MBTV). Xander: The Great Outdoors - All the nicknames: Captain Shaggy (Xander) from Shaggy of Scooby-Doo (of course). Psychlo- the name of the dread-locked aliens from Battlefield Earth (worst movie of the year). Chalupa- one of the specialties offered by the good people at Taco Bell. Zippy- from the comic Zippy the Pinhead. Ski- short for the boys real last name. All five boys (including Dawg whose name should be self explanatory) are based, Im almost embarrassed to admit, on guys who work on the team I supervise at work. - Comment about getting voted off the island- a reference to Survivor and a SO to my RL buddy djeber. - Comment about the evil breakfast food- a SO to Bagel (of course). A Lack of New Fanfic - The comment about someone being so adorable you want to put them in your pocket is from David Sedariss radio essay The Santaland Diaries. - The comment about the fries and dipping sauce is from the11thhour.com - The comment about Spikes cheekbones is from wwolfe. Doyle: A Day in the Life - The demon mocks Doyles accent with a line from an old Bugs Bunny cartoon (ye might, rabbit, ye might) - Don Corleone is The Godfather from the novel and movie of the same name. - Doyle is given the job of Towel Boy at Madame Dorians (SO to DB, my spiritual fianc). Spike: Hope I Die Before I Get Old - The title is from the Who song, My Generation. - The 1968 Chrysler Imperial- this was the car my mother drove when I was small. Angel: Adventures in Babysitting - As many of you noted, Angel is reading Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone as the story begins. - The bobbin lace reference was a SO to Enigma. - This story was influenced both by jenm and frogmommas baby discussions and a question XW asked about what babies are thinking when they hug you and squeal with delight. Faith: And the Greatest of These - Title is from Pauls first Letter to the Corinthians, verses 13:12-13, in the New Testament: For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall understand fully, even as I have been fully understood. So faith, hope, and love abide; but the greatest of these is love. - Miriam (Rhonda Mae Gallagher) is modeled on several real-life women, most notably Karla Faye Tucker, who was executed in Texas last year. Buffy: Surf City - The three friends are from the Buffy movie, as is Merrick, Buffys first Watcher. Joss Whedon: An Open Fanfic - Gisele is the supermodel of the moment, rumored to be dating Leonardo DiCaprio. Thanks, Rolling Stone, for inserting that useless fact into my brain. This is why I let my subscription lapse, you should know. - I have no idea how much search engine deals are made for, and to the best of my knowledge there is no real decorating style known as neo-American. Words That Surprisingly (to me, anyway) Are Not Recognized by Spell-Check: Showtime, Cartwheeling, Ursa, Crackhead, Chainmail, Crescendoed, Snark, Lockpick, Groundcloth, Sackful, Skanky, Drugmaker, Vampiric, Jello, Unlife, Alleycat, Seafoam, Latina, Chipperness, Ensouled Main Menu ~ Summer Vacation Series |
