Serena/Tsukino
Usagi/Sailor Moon
Tsuki means moon, and Usagi means
rabbit. The -no at the end of the last name shows possession.
Thus, Sailor Moon's name literally translates to be "rabbit of
the moon". According to Japanese legend, there are rabbits who
live on the moon, always pounding sweetcakes(or mochi) with
mallets. To the Japanese, it is believed that the face of the
moon resembles a rabbit.
Usagi's counterpart in Greek
mytholgy is Selene, the goddess of the moon. Daughter of
the Titans Hyperion and Theia. Sister of Helios (sun) and Eos
(dawn). She also had love affairs including Endymion
(Sailormoons prince charming Tuxedo
Kamen). Unfortunately the love story is unrequited love.
She fell deeply in love with him. She always watched over
while hes asleep. Anyway, she also seduced him, so as a
result they have 50 daughters! She is also involves with
Zeus and had a daughter Pandia.
She rode across the sky in a
chariot drawn by two a0607c horses. Also a tutelary deity of
magicians. Selene was sometimes identified with Artemis as a
moon goddess. She became syncretized with Hekate in later
Greek mythology. The Romans equated her with
Luna. |
