A CON WOMAN

This incident took place about fifty years ago in the city of Kanpur. At about 11 : 30 a tall and graceful young lady in flowing chiffon saree, wearing diamond earings and a pearl necklace ascended three or four steps and entered the outer room where patients of a famous doctor were waiting for their turn. The doctors clinic was situated hardly fifty yards from the kotwali as the road turns left from the Meston Road to the famous Shivala market. The doctor lived in the building above and his car was parked outside on the road. As soon as a patient emerged from the doctors chamber she entered the room ignoring the attendant. The doctor felt displeased at her sudden out of turn appearance. But she said to the doctor in her most affable manner 'Excuse me for bursting into your room thus. I have to seek your permission to bring one of our trusted servants, a steward or munim, who has lost his mental balance for some time now. He just utters every ten to fifteen minutes and sometimes quite frequently the words 'take the bill and give payment, The doctor said, "All right. You bring the patient and I will see what I can do." Very hesitantly the lady further urged, "Doctor Sabeb. If it be not asking too much, can you allow me to take your car? I shall be back in less than half an hour. The fellow makes much fuss and our car is at the garage for repairs. It shall be very kind of you if you can do me this favor." The doctor though hesitant just could not say no to this unusual request of the charming lady who seemed to belong to a very wealthy family and to be well bred. He called his attendant and asked him to tell the driver to take this lady to bring her patient to the clinic.

The lady came out and took the driver to Birhana Road and got down at a well known jewelers shop. She asked for some necklace sets and out of the many chose a very costly one, studded with diamonds, emeralds and rubies. She took matching earings, bracelets and a ring. Then she chose a gold chain and a beautiful pendant with a big emerald at the center. Then she told the jeweler, "Kindly send with me your accountant or someone else with the cash memo up to Dr. Bhallas clinic. I have brought his car with me. It won't take much time as I live in his house above the clinic. I have not brought enough cash with me, so Ill make full payment there. Thinking that the lady must be the doctors daughter-in-law or some close relative. The jeweler felt no hesitation and he sent his accountant with the lady. They could see the doctors car parked outside the shop and his driver whom many recognized.

The lady brought the accountant to the doctors clinic, took hold of the bag with the jewelry and asked the accountant to wait. Leaving him with the other patients she entered the doctors chamber and told him that the patient - 'Brij Bhushan' - she had heard his name in the shop - was sitting outside with the patients. The doctor said, "Its all right. Ill examine him in due time." Then the lady came out of his chamber and told the accountant to wait there and she would be back with the payment soon. After saying this she stepped out of the clinic and in no time vanished from the scene.

After waiting for about half an hour the accountant began to feel restive. He said to the attendant, "Ask doctor Saheb to take the bill and give payment." The attendant conveyed the message to the doctor. Again after fifteen minutes he asked the attendant to tell the doctor that he was getting late and that he should take the bill and give payment. Again the attendant conveyed the message. Then the doctor told him that he was a mentally sick patient and that he should pay no attention to him. He added that he would examine him after disposing of other patients. Another half an hour passed and the accountant grew somewhat suspicious. By this time only a few patients were left there. He got up and pushing aside the attendant entered the doctors chamber. Now he was face to face with the doctor. He said, "Doctor Saheb, a lady from your house has bought jewelry valued at Rupees thirty thousand and had said that the bill would be paid without any delay and here I am waiting for more than an hour. She had come in your car and had asked me to wait outside and that she had also talked to you. Now here is the bill. Seth Ji must be anxiously waiting for me."

As the doctor listened to the accountant his mouth opened and his eyes grew wide with shock. He stared at the man for some seconds. He looked quite sane and talked sensibly. Now the reality dawned upon him. The lady who looked so rich and refined was a cheat. While he was asking for more details from the accountant a phone call came from the jeweler's shop. The jeweler told the doctor how a lady had come to his shop and had selected Rs. Thirty thousand worth of jewelry of her choice. As she asked I sent accountant with her to collect payment. I think she either belongs to your family or is a close relative as she had come in your car. More than one hour has passed but our man has not yet returned. Is he present in your clinic? Kindly inform me as I am much worried." The doctor expressed his shock and said that he never knew the lady narrated how she had befooled him. The accountant was their in front of him but there was no trace of woman. She had quietly slipped away. He must now seek the help of the police without delay.

The jeweler was defrauded of a cool rupees thirty thousand worth of jewelry by a con woman. The complaint was lodged with the police but even years after no trace of con woman could be found.

SURINA  -  a novellete (Note)

Surina is a novelette. Obviously its canvas is small and deals with only a few characters in some detail.

Surina and Rahul have been shown as enlightened persons with a mind of their own. The discussion with their father in the very beginning shows their independent view of looking at things and problems. Prem Narain could not fully appreciate their unconventional thinking but he shows trust in them.

Girish is also intelligent but he is a hypocrite. His assertions and actions are contradictory. His judgment is vitiated by his selfish interests which ultimately lead to his divorce with Surina.

In contrast without elaborating the character of Anand, the qualities of his head and heart are brought out by the perfect love and understanding between him and Surina.

Jyoti is a bully and a coward. The moment surina confronts her, her bubble of pretense is burst.

Sushma is just a nice girl and offers no excuse to probe her psyche. Same is the case with Rajnish and Sona.

Prem Narain and Rajni, Iqbal Shanker and Savitri Devi are liberal minded parents far from the tyrannical parents and in-laws who abound in our society. They accept gracefully the independence of the new generation.
