Halloween Facts:
It is believed the druids were the first ones to observe Halloween. They celebrated the festival of Sarnhain (the end of the harvest and a time to honor the dead) on November 1 each year going back as far as 700 B.C. Later, the night before became known as the Eve of All Hallows = Hallow Even = Hallow e'en
What about Trick-or-Treating? On the eve of Samhain, people left food on their doorsteps to keep hungry spirits from coming in. Those going to festivals that night began to dress in ghost, witch and goblin costumes so the same spirits would leave them alone. Even now, these costumes are among the favorites every year.
The Black cat, a particular symbol of Halloween were originally believed to be a sidekick to the witches to protect them from negative forces. Vampire Bats, also a symbol of Halloween, do drink blood, but don't hail from Transylvania. They live in Central and South America and take blood from the horses, cattle and birds they find.
Pumpkins are very much a part of Halloween. The biggest pumpkin in the world weighted 1,262 pounds and weighed in on 6 October 2001 at a pumpkin festival in Canby, Oregon. Pumpkins are really very nutritious being one of our best sources of Vitamin A. Of course, most pumpkins are not eaten at Halloween, but instead are made into Jack-O-lanterns. The first one was really made from a turnip.
One word which goes with Halloween is candy. In fact, Halloween is sweeter than any other holiday. One fourth of all candy sold each year is purchased between September 15 and November 10
