“If at first you don’t succeed, redefine success.”

It was about midnight, and Kagome found herself having spent a good three hours in the school library. The place itself reminded her of one of those haunted mansions from the horror movies; the tomes of ancient volumes sat dank and dusty upon the creaking wooden shelves, and cobwebs hung from the ceiling corners, a wisp of silver strand hanging loose here and there.

The raven haired girl eeped slightly, and back stepped out of this certain section. But she reluctantly stepped back into the room, the door creaking shut behind her.

Kagome would have liked very much to look this topic up on the ‘net, than have to do it in a horrific library section. But, alas, the topics on the internet were all fan sites to certain Youkai and Hanyou based Anime. She shivered slightly, and took another step forward, biting her lip as she emerged into the dim light, which projected itself from a solitary musty light bulb that hung from a single cord to the ceiling. Oh yeah, this was not Kagome’s favorite moment.

After taking a few steps towards the wooden book shelves, she lazily traced her finger past the titles such as; ‘How to kill your ex in ten ways’ ‘The art of the Buddha’ ‘So you want to be a wizard’ ‘So you want to kill your Hanyou half brother and get his sword’ ‘A guide to the art of looking more beautiful then a scaly ass toad’ ‘How to bring back the dead Vol. II; using clay to form the body’ ‘A guide to local pet shops selling Neko Youkai’ and ‘The art of speaking to big dog demons in the third person; By Rin Ningen’. Kagome screwed up her face at the titles, until she came upon some things that looked a bit promising;

“’Sengoku Togi Zoushi‘... a feudal fairy tale? Oh... and there’s ‘Sengoku Jidai’ too... Demon’s of the warring states Era... But I need something on Hanyou’s... yes! here’s one...” Kagome kept on mumbling to herself, as she placed the two books down on the ground beside her feet, and looked up at the one sitting on the top shelf.

“Hanyou No Mori... Well, it’s something about half demons anyways...” She mumbled, looking up at it.

“Demo... how the heck am I going to get up there?” she pondered, lifting her hand to her chin, looking thoughtful. She then saw a rolling ladder at the end of the aisle, and hurried over to it, bringing it to where she had momentarily been standing. Kagome placed her right foot on the first step, and clutched to the side of the ladder to see if it was sturdy. The ladder passed her test, and she began her ascent up the ladder, and reached her hand up to bring down the book.

She turned on the ladder, so that she was sitting on the top step, and studied the book in her lap. It was a dark crimson color, with embedded green lettering, that must have used to shine at the exact hit of sunlight, but were now dull from being in this musty room for so long.

Kagome slowly opened the book, and it made a creaking sound from not being opened in so long. She blew down on the page, and was greeted with a face full of dust, and began to cough into fits. The school girl had turned her head to the side, and opened one of her eyes that had been closed to peer down at the page. She snapped her head back at the dedication on the first page, and her eyes grew wide, as she started to shake.

“Dedicated to Higurashi Kagome, the motherly figure who disappeared from my life a very long time ago. And also dedicated to Inuyasha- the father figure I wish I never had- May he get sat more times than I can count.” Kagome stared at the page, and closed the book, looking for an author. She found it, and she blinked.

“Demo... I don’t know anyone name Kitsune-bi...” She mumbled uncertainly.

Now, filled with the inconspicuous feeling that she was being watched, she stepped down the small ladder, and walked over to the door, leaving with the three books in her hands.

“Inuyasha, you can’t do a report on Youko Kurama.” Miroku groaned, gripping the back of the computer chair.

“AND WHY THE HELL NOT?!” He argued, printing out yet another picture of the silver haired fox demon, to add to the other pictures of him as a human and as a Youkai. They had been on the computer for about 2 hours now, and Miroku was still trying to talk him out of it.

“BECAUSE HE ISN’T REAL!” Miroku reasoned, shaking Inuyasha’s chair again. Inuyasha scoffed, and turned around to narrow his eyes.

“Oh, and I suppose Ichigo, Mint, and Lettuce are any more real?” He snorted. Miroku pulled an offensive look, and nudged his Tokyo Mew Mew books under his bed with his foot.

“Of course they are! They’re these wonderful humans with extinct animal genes in them-”

“THEY’RE NOT EVEN DEMON! At least Kurama is a demon!”

“HE’S BASED OFF OF AN ANIME!”

“WELL, YOURS ARE OFF A COMIC BOOK!”

They glared at each other a moment longer, before Miroku pouted, and pulled out a pencil and a piece of paper, along with his comic book. Inuyasha narrowed his eyebrow.

“What the hell’re you doing now?”

“Research.”

“FEH!”

“Oi, Kouga! did you find a Hanyou to do your report on?” Ginta asked, lifting his head up from ‘of Dogs & Demons’. Kouga nodded, and continued to type hurriedly on his keyboard, his hands moving in a blur. Hoggaku’s eyes grew wide.

“Honto ne? Who did you pick?” he asked, coming up behind him. Kouga shifted uncomfortably, and sighed.

“Some Hanyou named Naraku.” Ginta blinked, and chuckled.

“Heh, That’s funny. I know a guy named Naraku,. Ya know. he’s real creepy, and he’s got this long black hair and red eyes. Not very social either-GAH!”

Kouga had run over to him, and was lifting Ginta up by the scruff of his neck, and his eyes flashed a deeper shade of blue.

“Where is he?” He demanded. Ginta looked at him with wide eyes.

“I-I dunno! I hardly ever talk to the guy anymore! He’s gotten into all this illegal shit, ya know?” he stuttered. Kouga let out an inaudible growl, and dropped Ginta onto the couch. Hoggaku placed a hesitant hand on the formers shoulder, and brought Kouga back to his senses.

“Daijobu ka Kouga? You looked like you were gonna murder someone...ehehe..” He tried to make that sound like a joke, but Kouga looked hard at him, before starting to type again.

“Get me a beer Hoggaku.”

“H-Hai...”

Kagome sat in a recliner in the corner of her room, and lazily turned the page of ‘Hanyou No Mori’. The book interested her greatly, and she began to read the top of the next page, nibbling her fingernail thoughtfully, as her legs were pulled up in a slight fetal position.

“...The Hanyou in this story was so used to rejection, that it was hard to accustom to Kagome’s kind-ness. Inuyasha had been betrayed by almost everyone he knew, even by the one he had loved. He didn’t freely give out his trust. But yet, as I watched him day after day, he grew softer around her. He wasn’t the heartless bastard that I had first met when I was young, and he found himself trusting her, ever so slightly. Kagome helped him, unknowingly. She helped him cope with conflicting emotions that came him when his past love arrived, though sometimes in his eyes, she complicated them further. But he wouldn’t have it any other way. So he, in return, protected her. Inuyasha was her guardian. And, he probably loved her too. But, none of us ever found out. For fate works in cruel and anonymous ways, displaying all of it’s power, and all of it’s weakness. And what happened next was just another twist...” Kagome paused from her reading, when she realized that she had been reading aloud... and that she had an audience.

She lifted her gaze up from the book, and expected to see someone, but no one was there. This irked Kagome out a bit, as she sat up straighter, scanning the room.

“S-Sango-chan?” She whispered. No response came, and Kagome looked down at the book. It sat there, the page trailing off at the end, cluing in that the next chapter started on the turn of a page. She accomplished the silent plea, and flicked the page, and read the chapter title.

“’Why he let her go‘...?”

Um, ok. that was kind of a filler chapter, where nothing of real importance having to do with the plot happens. oh wait... Kagome found the book... ok, screw what I said up there, lol. I want... A LOT of reviews before I update... or I’ll make you wait three weeks again XD
