The style of traditional karate taught is Higashi, which is based on Wado Ryu and also incorporates elements of Aikido and self-defense techniques. Karate consists of Kihon (basics), Kata (fixed patterns of moves designed to simulate a fight) and Kumite (sparing) Kihon involves practicing basic moves such as kicks, blocks, punches, strikes, throws, locks and defense against weapons and is used to hone technique and general fitness. Kata is widely regarded to be an art and is an extremely useful way of training. As you progress you will learn progressively harder katas The Kumite we practice is semi-contact and is orientated towards either competition or practical self-defence (as Max would say "on the street") |

| For 7
years, the club has held a BUSA (British Universities Sports Association) regional championship, which draws clubs
from all over South West England and Wales. We also try to attend the BUSA
national championships each year and take part in a number of smaller
competitions and martial art demonstrations.
Kuro Hebi Kickboxing was created in response to demand for a self-defence orientated class focusing on developing the skills needed to defend yourself or avoid threatening situations. Classes focus on basic punches and kicks, as well as joint locks, throws and self-defence strikes. You will learn to apply fighting techniques that are common to many combat sports, including all styles of karate, boxing adn Tae Kwon Do. Through kickboxing you will improve your flexibility and overall aerobic fitness. Kickboxing centres on the power and purpose of the martial art, sacrificing some of the beauty of arts such as karate to become a fighting sport. Much of what is learnt in Kickboxing is applicable to Karate and students who wish to train in both disciplines progress most rapidly. |
