Hareeri Is Missed As a Symbol For Harmonious Living In Kurdistan

Feb 19, 2001
By: Dr M Husni

Franso Hareeri was killed on his way to the office at approximately 8.30 am on 18th
February 2001. A terrorist group has opened fire on him on one of the streets in Erbil, the
city he loved and served so sincerely.

Hareeri, an Assyrian, had devoted his life to the quest of the people of Kurdistan for freedom,
democracy, and harmonious living irrespective of race, religion or social status.

He was a person who called a spade, a spade. He was no hypocrite and he was always ready
to tell the true accounts of the events in Kurdish history that he was aware of or involved in.

His political style was open and honest. He was leaving little room for other’s tactical moves
to alter the true side of the story.

For more than 30 years of his political career, he defended the rights of poor and less affluent.
His office was open to hear people’s concern on weekly basis.

His love and affection for Erbil was insurmountable. He was a community man and a hometown
popular who was involved in people’s every day life. He worked so tirelessly to improve the
standard of sports in Erbil and to build its International Stadium. He was regularly attending the
literary conferences in town and contributed effectively to the Kurdish literature.

This terrorist and cowardly act of his killers is despised by Erbil community who missed one
of his beloved hometown man who had much more to give while the terrorists have nothing
to share except destruction and evil acts.

Ps: The writer has no political affiliation and had no personal relationship with the late
Hareeri.
