Kurdish Hurdle Cleared, Compromise Reached at MGK Meeting

Turkish Daily News
Feb 27, 2001

It is a fact that there has been disagreement between coalition parties over certain
political issues, which are the most controversial between the coalition parties. They
include the role and structure of National Security Council (MGK), broadcasting in the
mother tongue, educational freedom for all languages and abolishment of the death
penalty.

It is yet to be known how the coalition leaders have reached a consensus on these
sticky issues. But the TDN has learned that the broadcasting in the mother tongue
problem was solved by adding "every obstacles -- apart from Turkish -- over
broadcasting other languages will be removed," sentence to the program. There was
no objection for this sentence in the MGK meeting. That means that there will be no
obstacle for broadcasting and educating in Kurdish which has always been one of the
most controversial issues between Turkey and the EU.

National Movement Party (MHP), one of the partners of the coalition, has been
objecting to some regulations over the certain political issues.
