For a moment I would like to put aside everything we know and we have
been taught about
the Kurdish cause and our recent history struggle. Lets forget about
every ideology, religion,
and philosophy. Let us clear our minds and start a new fresh simple
beginning.
We are Kurdish people living on a land called Kurdistan. Our ancestors
have lived on this
land for thousands of years with a deep rooted history and rich culture,
long before Arabs
and Turks immigrated to the Middle East. Kurdistan was divided first
between the two
competing empires, the Safavides and the Ottomans. Many factors played
a major role in
this unfortunate incident, among them, political, religious, economic,
and geographical ones.
Many for obvious reasons claim that because there has never been a
unified Kurdistan, there
can not be any. Some Arab historians for instance, claim that Kurdish
people are originally
from Djinn, and obviously, in their view that in itself is enough reason
to refute any claim by
us Kurdish to freedom and basic human rights. On the other hand, the
Persians claims that
we are brothers in Aryanism, therefore, there is no need to demand
any rights or separate.
While the Turks who have came to middle East just few hundred years
ago and converted to
Islam much later, have used Islam and specifically Sunnism very cleverly
and successfully
as their shield against any Kurdish national aspirations up until the
collapse of the Ottoman
empire and the establishment of the new Turkish Republic. Then, after
everything was
settled and Attatork and his infant republic were safe, he turned his
back to the Kurdish
people and their national demands, by denying even their very existence
and calling them
Mountain Turks who have forgotten their noble Turkish roots. Ever since
then, all these
countries; Turkey, Iran, Iraq, and Syria individually and altogether
have exposed Kurdish
people to all kinds of systematic annihilation.
Nothing escaped their sick imagination, starting with mass deportations,
mass killings,
destroying the infrastructure of our people, even using chemical gasses.
All this has been
going on throughout the last century, and is still continuing while
the so called civilized
world was and is watching, but doing nothing to stop it. Lets not forget
that the colonial
powers were the ones who divided Kurdistan for the second time in the
aftermath of the first
world war. They draw arbitrary lines across the heart of our beloved
Kurdistan and gave
pieces to the newly established Iraq and Syria, while left the biggest
chunk for Turkey.
Anybody, who take a good look at the map of the Middle East can figure
out the real reasons
behind this division. Kurdish people are one of the major nations of
the area, by dividing the
land of Kurd in this method, they made sure that there will not rise
any strong powerful
country. Second, the entire Middle East will live in constant conflicts
with no possibility of
the area seeing any stability and prosperity. Thus keeping all these
countries weak marred in
their wars against Kurds who definitely will demand their national
rights.
Today, we find ourselves divided among four countries. Our fight for
freedom has been
interrupted but never ceased. However, Kurdish people as patriotic
and generous as they are
in their sacrifices, they have to realize that there is only one simple
reason why tragedy fell
and is falling upon us. And that is, not because we believe in certain
ideology or adhere to
certain religion, but because we are KURDISH and belong to a land called
KURDISTAN.
Our land, like many European countries was made up of many principalities
until not too far
ago. For various reasons, geopolitical and luck of communications our
nation failed to
produce leaders capable of leading our nation into a strong unified
country despite many
successive revolutions. While in Europe and perhaps under better circumstances
nations like
Italians under Victor Emmanuel with the help of Garibaldi were able
to unify the entire
Italian nations into one single kingdom. Also, Germans were able under
Bismark to mold
their nation into one. However, that does not deny us our legitimate
right to be free and
independent. On the contrary, it should prompt us harder towards our
ultimate goal of
freeing Kurdistan. We have the right to determine our own fate. This
is the Kurdish reality.
Neither us nor the countries who occupy our land should shy away from
it. As we are
entering the twenty first century, it is time for these countries to
join the rest of the civilized
world and free their own nations from tyranny and corruption. And let
us Kurds decide our
own fate. It is time to stop the sufferings and violence, and bring
about the changes that will
guarantee democracy, self-determination, and prosperity to all.
