Iranian gets 9 years for trying to smuggle Kurdish immigrants

 ALEXANDROPOLIS, Greece, Feb 23 (AFP)An Iranian truck driver who tried to smuggle
 81 Kurdish illegal immigrants into Greece in the back of his vehicle was sentenced to nine years
 and five months jail here on Friday for human trafficking.

 Mohamed Aslanzadeh, 32, of Teheran, was arrested only on Tuesday three kilometres (1.8
 miles) from the Greek border with Turkey.

 Aslanzadeh was also ordered to pay a fine of eight million drachmas (approx 23,771
 euros/21,500 US dollars.)

 The court was told the accused had been promised payment of 162,000 dollars (178,000 euros)
 to drive the would-be immigrants to Athens.
