Italians intercept clandestine Kurdish immigrants

ROME, Jan 18 (AFP)  Italian police on Thursday detained some 100 Iraqis of Kurdish
origin for illegally entering the country overnight, security forces said.

The Kurds, detained in the southern region of Apulia, were taken to a reception center at Otranto
 for identification.

No smugglers were arrested in connection with the incident.

In a separate incident in the same region, police seized a boat that had been abandoned on the
beach by smugglers who had apparently landed another group of illegal immigrants.

The smugglers managed to flee on foot after leaving the boat, police said.
